The end of summer
It's now the end of summer...are there things you must do to start preparing for fall and winter?
Of course, I gotta start thinking about the firewood, but I kinda like the outdoor work out, cutting and stacking the firewood, gathering up the kindling....
It's kinda sad when I have to mulch over all my flower beds in the fall, and the leaf raking in my huge tree covered yard is allot of work.
There's also the storm window task, my house is a hundred year old farm house with all the orignal windows and changing out the "hang and latch" is a real chore.
I'll have to clear out room in my basement for some of my potted plants to spend the winter safely. Patio furniture to store away...

Re: The end of summer
My hubby usually does all of that work on the weekends. I help when I can but my end of summer routine involves the kiddos. School work, extra curricular activities, that sort of thing. It takes up all of my time!

Re: The end of summer
I have very little closet and storage in this old house...the one chore I truly hate....the changing out of the seasonal clothing....

Re: The end of summer
The first thing I need to do is cover the Koi pond before the leaves from the trees start falling, otherwise I might have to get in and unblock the bottom drain which is 6' down.

Re: The end of summer
I love the weather as it changes, a little cool in the air is wonderful. I like to go for walks and enjoy the time outside...although, it is supposed to be 96 degrees outside today so I don't know much about the cooler weather...

Re: The end of summer
Ah yes, has to be my favorite time of year, besides winter. The warm days, and that little bite in the air with the promise of winter coming at night. The smell of leaves burning in the air.

Re: The end of summer
am feeling really guilty about not being able to help my long-time friend start cutting his firewood. i have actually found a terrific part time job hauling corn . its a real godsend to me (my social-security doesnt pay diddly) , but it leaves him without a helper. he says not to worry, but we have been so very close for so long that i do.................

Re: The end of summer
You're such a good friend Dave!
Firewood is allot of hard work, but I like it...something about it brings out the "nesting" part of me...making sure the home will be warm all winter.
I picked my last red tomato from the vine, and the asters and mums are blooming, the maples are starting to turn and the squirrels are jumping on the first acorns to drop.

Re: The end of summer
I do love all the seasons, and I love living where all the seasons have their extremes....
I just think there is something very primal, or animal about preparing for the inevitable onset of a cold harsh winter, and when it comes, that dark quiet time, almost a hibernation thing, when you cozy up with a warm partner, glowing fire, soft blankets, and ......alcohol spiked hot drinks!!

Re: The end of summer
Today, the winter is truly here, 10 degrees and its freezing, real icy wind. So doors locked, windows closed and log fires burning, rugs in front of fire with glasses of champagne waiting..........love the winter. lol
