Starry nights
I love astronomy, but really know nothing about it.
I do know the night skies can be so beautiful and calming, but also stirring too.
I missed the lunar eclipse but there will be another one in February, there was a recent meteor shower, dammit..missed that too and I just love meteor showers or the occasional falling star.
The "Second moon Mars" thing, well...not as rumored but still a nice sight to see and still visible but not as dramatically as in August. It looks like a star but twinkles much more, and twinkles red.
The big dipper is huge right now, the dippers and Orion are about the only constellations I can easily recognize.
I will always be awed by the Milky Way but the most fantastic sky display I've seen by far was years ago when the Northern Lights were clearly visible...gorgeous!!

Re: Starry nights
I missed the eclipse also, and the Mars second moon thing was dissapointing.I look at the heavens above once in awhile and wonder what it would be like to be able to go up and check things out.

Re: Starry nights
I was not able to see the eclipse either. Too many clouds. But I do like to sit out at night, just to gaze up at the heavens, see that occasional shooting star. It is really nice to able to sit watch the Northern Lights. They are spectacular.

Re: Starry nights
If the Northern Lights were spectacular from here in Missouri, I would just love to see them from the viewpoint of Alaska, or Canada!

I agree the northern lights are beautiful, but there are lots of wonderful things in the nights sky if you know where to look.....Orion is one of the most spectacular, you have everything from old stars to new ones, nebula and star clusters i'd be happy to show you the stars anytime.

Re: Starry nights
Tell me where to look! I'd love to know a little more...like...what is that brightest star in the southern part of the sky? I was always told it was actually the planet Venus...but I dunno...

Venus is very bright, mostly because its close and its has a thick atmostshpere which reflects the light....I'm not sure where to direct you at the moment as Orion is below the horizon here in the U.K,if you look it up on the web it should tell you where to look If you find it the two best stars to point out are Beetleguise, which is a red giant(this means its a very old star) which is in the north west of Orion and Rigel which is a blue giant (very young star) I think its one of the brightes stars in the nights sky (south east of Orion). Both of these are huge stars, much, much bigger than ours. If you look at the centre, just below the three stars that make up 'Orions belt' you will see a kind of starry smudge this is the Orion and demarrion nebulae this is where new stars are born! enjoy

I'm a flatbed truck driver by trade and do A LOT of driving at night. I'm always amazed at the different things I see going on in the sky on a nightly basis, who knows maybe I've seen a U.F.O. Being abducted and having my brain taken out and examined would explain a lot of things goin on in my head.

Ahhh.....saw the most beautiful falling star the other night.
It was huge! Fiery red, then to bright white with blue and green with a tail like a comet.

Re: Starry nights
I live in a very rural area of Vermont. I'm also 16 miles south of the border. The night skies are amazing here. I have seen the northern lights once, but last winter they were visible a lot. I just bought a telescope for some good viewing. The meteors were awesome this year.

When standing all by yourself on the deck of a boat on a calm dark starry night offshore, it can seem like you are actually in space. Not a cloud anywhere, nor lights of land and man. Just the starlit beauty of the heavens glistening on the water. If there is anything on this earth that is truly amazing, that is it!

Standing in the desert is pretty much the same. Makes a person realize just how small and insignificant they really are.

I saw a satellite come down many years ago. I was like a huge shooting star but much brighter and longer - very spectacular. Complete fluke that I saw it, but totally memorable.
