National "What" day? part 2
It was fun before, felt like doing it again...
Today in the US it's...
August-20
National Homeless Animals Day
(Please, do not celebrate today by dumping any homeless animals on my door step...I've got a full house already!)
Nothing on the UK calendar for today
Canada - it's Discovery Day (Yukon)
(eh...make whatcha want out of that one!)
Also...names for the August Moons include Corn Moon, Barley Moon, Dispute Moon, Weodmonath (Vegetation Month), Harvest Moon, Moon When Cherries Turn Black.

Hiya. Hope you are ready for this. Your question twigged my curiosity. Did a bit of digging and came up with this lot. Hope it helps. lol
"A bank holiday is a public holiday in the UK. Although there is no legal right to time off on these days, the majority of the population not employed in essential services (eg: Utilities, Fire, Ambulance, Police, Health Care Workers) receive them as holiday.
Bank Holidays are so called because they are days upon which banks are shut and therefore (traditionally) no other businesses could operate.
The Banking and Financial dealings act 1971 was passed listing bank holidays for UK as follows:
1st january
Friday before Easter Sunday (Good Friday)
The day after Easter Sunday (Easter Monday)
1st Monday in May
Last Monday in May (Spring Bank Holiday)
Last Monday in August (Summer Bank Holiday)
25th December (Christmas Day)
26th December (Boxing Day)
These apply to England and Wales only. Ireland and Scotland have their own days"
I hope this clarifys it for you Chazzy. Bearing in mind they originally came about in the 1800's because an owner of a bank wanted to watch cricket and let his staff watch cricket!!!. Amazing
But thats us Brits for you, historically traditionalistic!! lol lol

Over here in the UK its also the tenth anniversary of Lady Diana, Princess of Wales's death.
A bit of a big deal with memorial services all over the place.
Just doesnt seem like ten years ago she was killed in that car crash in Paris.
