The trapped miners
I know that this incident has grabbed hold of my heart, everytime the TV is on, I will flip over to the 24 hour news station in hopes of hearing some good news about this.

My daddy was a miner for decades, here in Missouri it's iron ore that's mined.

I can remember when I was so very young, he was caught in a collaspe and nearly lost his legs. I remember him in those casts up to his hips, trying to get around in a wheelchair.

Wow Chazzy, that makes the entrapment personal for you...

Our church lifted them up this morning during services and hopefully they will be rescued soon!!

Re: The trapped miners
He did recover from that, not a complete recovery, his legs were held together with pins and casts, so of course he still carries some residuals. It was such a difficult time for our family.

I remember how he use to bring us kids home really cool rocks in his lunchbox, beautiful big crystal quartz and fool's gold.

Re: The trapped miners
ok, so i was wondering...
what will the NEXT tragic event be, and where?...
it was barely one week after the bridge collapse here, in Minnesota...that's all we heard about on the nationwide news...now, all we hear about is the miners...
i'm not trying to sound negative here, but...
WHEN WILL THERE BE SOME GOOD NEWS, FOR A CHANGE???

Re: The trapped miners
Sorry lonely, there is no ratings with good news.
I had to work at the bridge site last week. A Minneapolis PD Lieutenant, let me go out and see it. It was 1am and they had all the lights on it, as divers were still there. WOW, that was site that I'll never forget. It was all so surreal. It is hard to describe.

Unfortuantely,FLP is correct. The news media in this country refuses to broadcast anything positive as it hurts ratings.

Oh, I see good news on the local and national broadcasts...but right now I'm more concerned with these trapped miners and their families, and the mining company.
I'm pleased that there is so much coverage on this, and I can easily be kept informed on what is done to get to these miners, what's being done to take care of their families, and what could this mining company could have done to prevent this...etc....I can't help but relate to incidents of miners and I can't help but to worry and pray for them all.

Re: The trapped miners
i did not intend for my earlier post to sound like i don't care and am not concerned with the mine collapse...
i just get tired of the media overwhelming us for a week or two, then moving on to the next disaster...

Re: The trapped miners
Oh not at all dear, the way media handles things really annoys me too and I have to limit how much news I expose myself to.
It's day 8 I beleive for these miners, there's still some hope here and some chance of good news.

We're keeping our fingers crossed, and they are in our thoughts and prayers. Anything is still possible, let's hope that it is good news. And very soon.

What terrible accident. I think that the rescue effort will continue. They may have to re-group and possibly come up with a new plan of attack. But they'll continue with the efforts.

Re: The trapped miners
I just read that they are suspending rescue efforts indefinitely. What a horror this has become. 12 days and counting.

Re: The trapped miners
Yeah, the underground rescue was suspended immediatly, they will continue the hole drilling rescue from up on the moutain.

It sometimes takes tragedy to force major reforms. It's just a shame saftey reforms can't come before a catastrophe happens.

Re: The trapped miners
Coal mining is a dangerous business. When my husband and I were first married he worked in the coal mines in SW Virginia. Most people have a stereotype of mines...that you can walk in them...not true for all of them.

He had to lay flat on his back and shovel coal into the cars...he got paid by the car, and that was only a few dollars.

The old Tennessee Ernie Ford song about owing your soul to the company store was very true long ago. I have some of the original script that was used...given to me by a friend.

Re: The trapped miners
I know what you mean Goody!my grandfather was in the mines all his life, and didn't make much money, and they had the co. store that overcharged him for food and stuff he needed to keep us fed and in a home.He got hurt lots of times but didn't get any comp for it and when he had a heart attack in the mines and died later at the hosp.(this was in 1965)his wife (my grandmother)didn't get anything and we had it real hard after that.I think miners are special people and every attempt should be made to keep them safe and rescue them when trapped.

Re: The trapped miners
My daddy was a miner too, nearly lost his legs in one accident, I remember it took him so long to recover and it sure was harsh and hard times for us all.
Other times he nearly lost his life, and sadly...he saw others lose thiers.

I know very well about that too Chazzy, a nephew was crushed by a machine called a Miner, a few years ago.

Re: The trapped miners
There's updates now on this tragedy...there was NO earthquake.
$1.5 million sounds like way too low of a number to me.

Feds blame mine operator for fatal collapse

Feds: Violations by Utah mine's operator led to 2007 collapse that killed six

Bad design, improper mining led to Crandall Canyon collapse, feds say

Mine operator fined more than $1.5 million

Re: The trapped miners
I think there's ben far too many mine collapes in recent years. Of course, there is better coverage now.

I find it hard to believe that with all the technology available that there isn't a safer and more eficient way to mine. Other than "open pit" that is.

True JC, you just wonder how the Miner's of the 20's and 30's survived... my Grandfather was a Blacksmith in the mines in Pennsylvania, succumbing to 'Black Lung'.

Re: The trapped miners
not much mining up here any more, and groups do thier best to block them , one of theone that were working then ladyh pit mine went on for a few years, gold , silver and copper were took out by the hopper car full, then it ended and they reclaimed the land, whats left was a big deep narrow hole in the ground with water in it , now a park . people are just beating the gates down to use the place ,i think there might be hiking trails, we should hike it some time...
