Dealing with the public
With my job I have to at times deal with the public some. We have a recycling business at our work. How do you do when you have to deal with a person who is grumpy or just not what you would consider a congenial person? I'm a people person. I always try to greet everyone with a hi and a smile. I'm a chatty person so it doesn't take much for me to strike up a conversation with a person. Now I will admit that some people when they come in, I just try to get them out as quickly as I can! But I'm still polite to them.

Re: Dealing with the public
I don't work with the public anymore, but I can say I'm astounded at the lack of manners I see when I am a customer.
I find it very rude for the person to be checking out my items at the register to be carrying on a personal conversation on their phone...especially when I need to ask them about or for something, and it's even ruder when they act a bit huffy cuz you're interupting their silly gossip and goofy chit chat. "I'll have to call you back,(sigh) I have to wait on somebody".....
I do so appreciate someone who is cheerful and has good manners!

Re: Dealing with the public
When I talk to a reciever, shipper, broker or one of those nice people in the cars with the flashy lights, I am always nice, polite and as accomadating as I can be.
The company depends on these people [except for the ones with the flashy lights] not only for the frieght I get, but for the entire company.
If I am faced with a place that takes long to load or unload, I usually get them to say they're sorry for taking so long. I which case, I simply tell them "it's ok, I'll be here 'till I leave"

That's a good one JC! At my work we deal with a lot of truck drivers. Some of them are really nice when we have to recharge our forklift, which is usually half way through loading.

Re: Dealing with the public
Dealing with the public can suck! I've worked for a major retailer for almost 20yrs and saw alot that wasn't good.
With the job I have now...not always popular with the public but oh well. Like it was said earlier...people are so rude and the kids.. wow...If I had acted like they do now...would not have lived to be this age.

I know exactly what you are talking about. We have a whole new generation coming in at work. These young punk ass prick kids, they don't even respect themselves, let alone anything else. It really makes my job tough.

This is one reason I changed from Sprint to Verizon a few years ago. Sprints "customer service" was a bunch of rude and generally discourteous people. As my friend calls them. "rejects from the fast paced food service industry" [mcdonalds-etc]
It seems that most young people resent the fact that they have to work. There are of course, many that are the opposite. Seems to me that the ones that are going to college are the ones that have an interest in doing thier jobs well.

try having a hungry person waiting in line n=behind someone else who can't decide what they want, or that they should get off the phone until they get done ordering....

Re: Dealing with the public
I don't have a job yet, so dealing with the public is not really my forte right now. There is a few people up near me that need to take a lesson or two. The ladies at the local, "Dunkin' Donuts" need to learn the language. This one woman in the mornings talks to her friends in Spanish. That's not so bad, but not in the drive microphone?! Then when I think she's talking to me or she quiets down, I begin to speak out my order and get, "Hey, I didn't ask you for anything yet, be quiet!" I wonder how many order, then drive away? Then there's the Indian woman. Her only problem, is she can't get rid of that accent. Couple that with the microphone that makes you sound like your in a long collapsed tunnel and everybody seems rude to her, so she beats me to the quick and yells at me first. Trouble is it takes me a mile up the road to figure out what she was trying to call me!...

Re: Dealing with the public
I deal with the public everyday, and I agree with the fact that some in customer service are more then rude to their customers, but I also realize that the Customer is not always right.........sometimes you just gotta suck it up and carry on knowing they will leave eventually.....
However, I work with alot of different cultures and I find they get the worst of the gist from the customers....Some of the girls I work with are not 100% great with their English and they get alot of flack for this, but if sometimes the customer could show some patients and appreciation they might find that their is a really friendly person behind the confused language

Re: Dealing with the public
My job I had couple years ago I was there for 7.5 years and had dealt with customers every day I went into work. I liked it for the time being. Although some of my co-workers were unfortunate with frequent cranky customers unlike myself.
