Gape-rs Block
Your going down the road in your vehicle,,when all of a sudden,,red and blue flashing lights appear up ahead, as you approach closer you see a couple smashed vehicles, class on the pavement, the fire Dept. a rescue vehicle, the medics are helping the injured and the police trying to direct traffic past the scene.
Which person or combination of persons below are You.
1.Your mind shocked with,,,Oh my God,,,look, look, there is someone lying on the ground,,,paying very little attention to the officer trying to direct traffic and almost bringing your vehicle to a stop, trying to see an injured body, while praying,,,, Jesus,Mary and Joseph, I hope no one is seriously injured! The police officer sees you are somewhat shocked at the sight of the accident and taps on your fender while trying to wave you past.
2. your in your vehicle, behind example 1. first you say "Oh shit"! then put on your seat belt and start approaching the gape-rs block and lightly tap your horn trying to get the slowed traffic moving in coordination with the police officer direction, you are already late for your appointment and do not need this gape-rs block to make you any later than you already are, while Saying those stupid fucks, they should have slowed down.
3. You roll up your windows, don't want to get any blood on you, or hear the sounds of injured people crying, you edge over off the road as much as possible while passing, you do not even turn your head to look, but after you pass, you glance in the rear view mirror and are glad to get out of there, thinking Gawd,,that could have been me!
4. You just roll with the Punch's , you glance over, just to briefly see if you know anybody, and even take the opportunity of the slow moving traffic to ask the officer for street direction.

Re: Gape-rs Block
Kinda a combination of 3 and 4. I only look when traffic is going to slow (not doing anything else), but I won't look when the speeds are reasonable. I know what everyone's cars look like and most of them are fairly unique, so I'll mostly know if its someone I know. I don't stop if there are ample people to help out already, but if I see it happen I'll pull over and call 911. I have been in two accidents, one I didn't see coming and the other I did. Neither of them were all that bad because I wasn't driving like an idiot during the accidents. I rarely drive stupid and usually both people have to be for the accident to get bad.

Re: Gape-rs Block
AT one time or other I think I have been a partial combination of them all, I have seen so many accidents in so many different states, and everyone is different, besides just your classic rear-ender of course.

Re: Gape-rs Block
I live in a tight knit small community..so first thought is always that I don't want to look because I am afraid it will be a friend or family member....then I force myself to check it out to make sure it isn't anyone I know....then a feeling of being morbid if I look to long, so ...quick check, not anyone I know...then a prayer as I move along and let the professional people do their job.

4. You just roll with the Punch's , you glance over, just to briefly see if you know anybody, and even take the opportunity of the slow moving traffic to ask the officer for street direction.
5. You park your car in the middle of the only moving lane. For some unknown reason, you feel the need to stop traffic on the highway. You get out of your car to survey the damage, because your 65 to 85 year old eyes aren't that good enough to see that far. A police officer asks, "What on earth are doing?" for which you reply, "Relax, I'm an EMT, I'm suppose to stop at all accident scenes." The only problem with that is, that was back in the day when an ambulance arrived trailing six real horses.
6. You are in so much of a hurry, that you contemplate a dukes of hazard move in either the ditch or the median strip. You even consider driving in the opposite lane against traffic. As you arrive on the scene, you notice that its almost over, but people with their noses pressed against the glass are about to slow your progress down to a crawl at best. You begin to yell, at the top of your lungs, obscenities in their direction. You know your yelling loud enough, even though the windows are rolled up all the way, because others next to you and the service people on the scene begin to look about questionably. You now what the term, "Between a rock and a hard place" refers to.

Re: Gape-rs Block
With the exception of the "being shocked thing", I'm really about everything I've read here. Yes I check things out and yes... I will look at the bodies. I have seen come really bad ones that really didn't bother me. Dont get me wrong, it is a terrible thing that things like this happen, but, the aftermath doesn't bother me.. rather it medically and in a forensic way intrigues me. Emotion really has nothing to do with it at that point. Strange eh?

Re: Gape-rs Block
I had an experience a few years ago in FLORIDA. I came upon a crowd of people surrounding a sinking vehicle in a pond at a golf course outside of DISNEY WORLD. It seems the driver had a heart attack, veered off the road and into the pond. A few in the crowd had waded into the water, jumped onto the roof of the rapidly sinking car and somehow pulled the one passenger out of the car but was unable to get to the driver in time. The medical examiner said later that the driver was dead before the car went into the pond.
I stood there stunned, watching the few good samaritans attempt a rescue. I thought about going out into the pond (about 30 ft) but there were already 7 or 8 people there.
I don't know what I would consider myself.

Re: Gape-rs Block
I've witnessed an accident occur right in front of me, caution, divine intervention and maybe intuition, kept me from being a part of that mangled mess....being the first and only on the scene was horrible of course...God bless the good Samaritans that stopped....forming a kind of "brigade line" all the way down the steep ravine, passing down things like blankets to help the victims from going into shock, relaying the 911 messages to me from the cell phone like "cut the battery from the car to keep it from exploding"...there's something you never wanna hear spoken to you!
We may as humans have some nature in us that can be morbid, but in all, I think, we so hate to see suffering and tragedy in others...

Re: Gape-rs Block
I'm like you Chazzy. We live in a small community. I always try to make sure it isn't someone we know. Then I say a prayer for them. We had a couple that were coming from the other direction that we were. He fell asleep at the wheel. His car came right at us. I was able to swerve and not hit any oncoming traffic. When I came to a stop I looked in my rear view to check on the other people. They were crashing in a ditch when I looked back. My husband and I were out of our car and up to the scene. Nobody else seemed comfortable to do anything but watch. We made sure that the scene was safe for us to get close. We were both so glad that we had training. We were able to help the couple. The young lady was so upset she asked if we could come to the hospital with them and call her parents for her. They were from out of town and had no one to help them. We never saw them again after we left the hospital. But about 2 months later we received the nicest thank you letter from them both.

Re: Gape-rs Block
Unfortunately too many people "don't want to get involved" for fear of lawsuits and "shyster" lawyers. Most states now have a First Responder law on the books where you are not held legally liable while trying to assist at an accident or medical emergency. As long as you are first on the scene, and yield to the professionals when they arrive you have no fear of helping. Some folks seem to be paralyzed in extreme situations but if you might be in the position to save a life or mitigate injuries it is almost stupid not to assist. The most important thing to remember is not to take any action that might make you part of the problem and/or an additional victim.

lol 2 is me. being a truckdriver i have seen WAY to many accidents i can remember driving by. thank god never been involved in 1. but seeing all those accidents starts to make you numb from it.
i could tell you stories that makes the hair on your neck stand up.
i hate people that slow down to take a good look. makes a dangerous situation even more dangerous. truckers call them "rubberneckers" lol they see if the have the head turn range of an owl as they drive by

Re: Gape-rs Block
If I'm away from my home area, and don't have to worry that it's friend or family, I can't stand to look! I say a little prayer and move on quickly...hell, I can't even stand to see wildlife roadkill on the road!
