Learning to drive
Who taught you to drive? Were you a good student? I learned a little in the short and sweet driver's education class in high school and boy, I was jealous of those farm kids in my class that were raised helping their daddy, driving the pickup to go feed the cows, learning to drive a tractor in the fields.
But mostly..especially when it came to driving a stick, I learned from my boyfriend and he wasn't always patient!
Have you ever taught someone to drive, was it nerve wrecking or a pretty good experience?

Re: Learning to drive
I learned how to drive in school. My teacher was a real cool guy. He had an artificial leg. He started out telling us that if we made a mistake and he used the wrong foot on his brake we would all be in trouble. He said that was his way of telling us that we had best not make any mistakes. hahahaha We had one guy in our driving group that always made all of our knuckles white. lol When I see him driving now, my knuckles still get white.

Re: Learning to drive
I started to drive at the age of 13, and was not a farm kid, all though I did drive a tractor every so often. But it was mom and dad who taught me to drive. I went ONCE, with a girlfriend and had to let her drive. OMG We had to take her sister into town, so her dad, a COP, told me to let her drive home, the long way. It was his brand new truck. All I can remember is looking out the window and seeing the ditch and remembering new truck, Cop. When we got back to her house, her dad almost died with laughter. I was white as a ghost, no pulse, no blood pressure, no physical activity at all. All I told him was "NEVER again" and went straight to the bar. To this day I will not teach anyone to drive. I wouldn't even teach Ma or the kids.

Learned to drive the same way I learned to us a computer, just bought one and jumped into the drivers seat, actually my first vehicle was a Honda motorcycle.

Re: Learning to drive
OH nrg, you were just the type of kid I was jealous of in Driver's ed class! Driving was already like second nature to them by the time they were 15!
REALshedevil...I had one of those Driver's Ed teacher too, would threaten you if you used the wrong foot for the brake, and boy was he a sticker for using the emergency brake everytime you parked a car...he was tall, dark, big booming deep voice and very scary!

Re: Learning to drive
I started out learning to drive with my ex- husband, NOT recommended... Then moved on to a reputable driving school. Flunked my test first time, I had that bottom twitching, brown pants feeling, ya know?...lol! So nervous!
I have now been driving for 18 years, love it, and touch wood, have never had an accident to date.

Re: Learning to drive
Over here you can drive with a provisional license as long as you have learner plates and the person next to you has a full license. So when i was 17, my 18 year old boyfriend would sit with me and we'd drive everywhere so i got confident very quickly. I had an excellent driving instructor and passed within 9 months of taking lessons.

Re: Learning to drive
I taught my children, my niece, and a few neighborhood kids, they were all a breeze to teach, using a step by step process. I started them all off with just riding around in a parking lot for the first four times so they could build their confidence, then off to a few quiet roads with just stop signs, then to roads with traffic lights, parallel parking, then on to the highways, and within 6 weeks, they were all prepared for their exam, passing with flying colors.
When I was sixteen, within not even two weeks, was a pro behind the wheel, till this day, driving is one of my favorite things I enjoy, no matter where I am driving, but no parking lots, especially the food/department stores , that's one of my peeves ERRRRRR!!! I would love to enter Petty's Driving School, drive a Nascar vehicle!!

Well, lets see, my father started to teach me, and after about two days, he hired someone else to teach me....However, my father did make me learn to drive a stick....As well as making me take my test on one...He always said, God forbid anything happens, you will always be able to drive......

Re: Learning to drive
We lived on the outskirts of the same town I'm in now when I learned to drive. I basically learned by driving my brothers car up and down the road, haulin' ass then pullin' the emergency break and tryin' to do a 360 in the
cul-de-sac If I remember correctly, it was an old Vega that he painted silver with a few cans of spray paint. We called it the silver bullet. We ran that thing through ditches and everywhere you could imagine! Those were the days..... *sigh*

Re: Learning to drive
Does this happen to anyone else? You get used to driving a stick...and then you get behind the wheel of an automatic and find yourself trying to step on a clutch pedal that isn't there, and grabing for a non existance gear shift?
That's such a silly feeling...gawd I love being 100% human!

That's happened many more times than once. The first few times nobody else was in the car... and hoped there wouldn't be.. but as luck would have it, it didn't stay that way.
Looking back on things, driving was a big issue as a teen, yes but came together nicely with the driver's ed thing. I don't know how they're doing with that class these days... but I'm believing that they need to do something to help hold these kid's interest on the important stuff. I was almost bored to death!!!! What do you think???

Re: Learning to drive
My mom rode with me while I had my learner's permit. She taught me the tricks to parallel parking. She never gave me hell about anything I might be doing wrong. She was very patient with me!
To this day, every time I parallel park, I think of her........

Re: Learning to drive
Funny...My dad used to do that imaginary brake thing...stomping his foot on the floor on the passengers side and flailing his arms. I would just look over at him ask if he was through?... My first cousin taught me and the deal is, that I teach his son when he reaches his age to drive, next year. I think he will be of age?!...
