the "DEATH" of our childhood heroes...
in recent news, apparently, Kellogg's and general mills cereal companies have decided to stop using cartoon characters on their cereal boxes and in their television commercials...claiming that it is contributing to childhood obesity...why blame an animated character like "Toucan Sam", or "Tony the Tiger". the main blame should be placed upon the parents who allow their children to eat way more than the USDA recommended daily serving. if you let your kids eat 3 big bowls of "LUCKY CHARMS" for breakfast 7 days a week, of course they are gonna gain weight...

Hey, I did catch that story on the news, too!
I'm guessing the parents complained about screaming kids wanting to base their eating habits on the packaging not the products...
I think it was mentioned that the cereal companies are going to try to change their formulas for these cereal to meet nutritional standards...GM's has already tried to do this to some of theirs...and it's not going over very well!

Re: the "DEATH" of our childhood heroes...
The National diabetes councel says that all children born after 2000 will have type 2 diabetes befor they are age 16 and also will be on one of the statin drugs as well for high cholesterol.
The main issue here is not the packaging so much as it is the High Fructose corn syrup and addictive flavor enhancers used in all packaged foods coupled with no neutritional value that leaves you always hungry and jamming more calories in that you could ever burn up, so the calories are converted by the liver enzymes to fat an stored for future starvation periods, which(starvation) never happens in this country so we just get larger and fall victoms to over eating.

They should stop putting all the crap and additives in foods, i have a qualification in nutrien and it is scary to think, most of the stuff doesn't need to be in most foods but they refuse to take them out. I don't think all parents are to blame and advertising definitely isn't, it's the food manufacturers who need to change.

Re: the "DEATH" of our childhood heroes...
It's just the same ole thing...high sugar, high fat, high calorie cereals with pratically no nutrional value and tons of artifical additives is marketed towards children, cuz the market industry knows that trying to sell this crap to adults wouldn't cut it, they count on saturday morning cartoon time to sell this stuff to kids, and using the cartoon charactors in the ads,on the package, and offering games on the box, and prizes inside will influence what cereals the kiddies will beg for.
General Mills has been changing the formula in quite a few of their cereals to satisfy the parents....good move...but I hear the stuff tastes like crap!

I heard that a different group wants him pulled from the commercials. They say he portrays children as, you guessed it, "Fat". Apparently, telling kids it's ok to be huge around the middle in summer is not the message they want. This group will probably get their way too, just like all the rest...
