What is worse,,,High Winds or Fast Low winds?
Wow,, Last nite we had some fast winds come through, we got trees down everywhere, have to go shopping soon as the stores open, try find a new hydraulic On-Off switch for the sump pump. Anyone else get hit? this storm is suppose to be large, stretching across a few states.

The worst winds are straight line winds. Sometimes as bad or worse than tornadoes.

Straight line "downburst" or "microburst" winds can reach really incredible velocities over a small area. They are a shear moving rapidly downward from fairly high altitude in the storm typically 15,000 feet or more. As the very cold dense air sinks rapidly, it picks up speed as it descends. A lot of damage from these straight line winds have been attributed to tornados. You have to look at the debris from some distance away and see what the pattern is...if random usually a tornado. If everything has a tendency to be mostly from and/or to one direction it was a microburst. This is what FEMA has the damage assessment teams look for during the post-disaster phase of a damaging severe storm.

We had bad storms here all afternoon and all night. Winds were clocked up to 80 miles per hour. The rain was coming down in sheets. I do love the sounds of storms though. Slept like a baby all night.
