Jake Brakes
Just reading about this..again..it's a trucker thing, something to do with "compression release engine brake"
When I read about it, it's always residential dwellers complaining the noise, especially in the middle of the night.
Anyone live in an area where Jake Brakes are a nusiance noise problem?
Since we do have quite a few truckers around here, I'd love to hear "their side" of this practice and maybe a more detailed explanation of the act.
Like..do you do it? Why? Have you ever been ticketed or fined for it?

Re: Jake Brakes
Its not that big a deal, its a built in mechanism on the engine that uses the piston compression to slow the vehicle down, it is Damn near the same thing as down shifting a stick shift car with the old classic glass pack mufflers. Yea it makes a little excess noise, but it saves on the brake shoes and break pads,,,,It is not anywhere near as bad as living within a 15 mile radius of an international airport,,,, Or having a pissed-off wife

Re: Jake Brakes
I've noticed a few areas are now posting signs against using these "jake brakes" in residential areas...is it noisier than a regular ole diesel pick up truck? Damn those things are obnoxious!

Re: Jake Brakes
You are right, and along the ILLinois express ways they have built large noise break walls by residential areas for noise polution.

Re: Jake Brakes
I don't think I've ever heard these "jake brakes" myself, but we've got plenty of diesel pick up trucks out this way, and it's deafening to be in front of one or behind on in a drive up window canopy at a bank or fast food joint, and just having one driving on the road outside my house can mess up a nice quiet porch or deck moment!

Re: Jake Brakes
These devices simply turn the engine into a compressor by partially holding the exhaust valves open.
the problem is the dumbasses [especially those with no mufflers] using them when it isn't really necessary. most areas now have anti compression brake laws because of these people.
I seldom use the one on my truck as I learned how to drive without one.

Re: Jake Brakes
What would be the reasoning behind a truck driver using this jake brake thing late at night in a residential area?
I guess it's just like anything anywhere, you have your well thinking considerate respectful people, and then you have a few rude thoughtless ones?

The Noise is like a loud fucking thundering perculating Purr, you know that noise you make by vibrating your tongue off the roof of your mouth,,,,,Now Jam a microphone in there with it turn the volume up all the way now and add a BLAH,BLAH,BLAH,BLAH,,,,DOWE,DOWE,DOWE,DOWE,DOWE,,,, and there you have it,,,,,,

Re: Jake Brakes
Jacobs brakes were not ever meant for normal slowing or stopping. They are intended for "holding" a rig back on long downgrades to conserve the brakes. They are more common on tractors that frequent the western US (where they are needed)than the "flatlands". Unfortunately some drivers have a strong desire to be noticed so they use them, I feel inappropriately, in an juvenile attempt for attention. Actually proper gear selection is more effective as a deterrent to runaways than "jake brakes" but just like those "four wheelers" on the road skill levels vary a great deal between the drivers. Best idea, defensive driving is the way to go regardless of vehicle size and weight. I agree with JCSOS, I learned to drive without one....planning ahead helps. I never got a noise ticket but some communities are getting very strict now due to stupid behavior from a few unthinking people. I believe there are a few parallels here that might apply to other situations!

Re: Jake Brakes
I hear the Jake brakes all the time. Living just a few blocks from a stop sign. Many cities in our area now have laws on the books to prevent these types of stopping devices from being used. They are irritating as hell, and most of the time is not even necessary.

Re: Jake Brakes
Jakes brakes are not as bad as a 2000 amp Kicker bouncing the trunk lid and fenders off a Camaro to the heavy base rap crap while being stuck in traffic. Sorry

Re: Jake Brakes
There's allot of peace disturbing abnoxious noises out there...I live near a motorcycle shop and often when someone picks theirs up from being repaired, they ride the fucker 70 or 80 mph up and down my road to "check it out"....and we have a daycare across the street, children everywhere.
Some people just need rules, laws and maybe a few tickets and fines to make them do the right and courteous thing.

Some trucks use the jake brakes without mufflers and they sound really loud especially inside the truck. I have custom mufflers on my truck that deaden the sound quite a bit, but I hardly use my jakes just as other drivers on here, I learned without one.
