"The lower third"
That's what I hear they call it...the lower third...the bottom third of your TV screen that they junk up with logos, and ads for upcoming shows...
Anyone else think this has gotten a bit out of hand? I hate it especially when it interferes with me being able to read subtitles and other text or covers up too much screen and I end up missing out on viewing something vital to the programing.
Kinda pisses me off, here I have a rather nice large tv, and the lower third is devoted to advertising... like the commercials during programing isn't enough!

Re: "The lower third"
Just like the internet TV has "devolved" into an advertising only platform. Does anyone remember NetZero when it was just dial-up and free for 10-12 hours a month? One little constant-sized rectangle at the top of the screen that ran ads while you were online (to give you time to look at something while your page was loading). It got bigger and then pop-ups that literally obscured the screen with multiple layers appeared until you finally paid the monthly fee to get rid of the ads....then the cycle started all over again with more pervasive ads. Digital cable and satellite TV will probably get worse as free broadcast TV as we know it, goes away forever in February 2009. The emphasis is to maximize profit at every turn. Has anyone noticed how many ads there are during breaks on a network show? To get around the rules for commercials, they cut back briefly to the show or its logo ( the infamous....NEXT ), then launch a fresh round of commercials after the "return" to the program. Television used to be a service and fun part of the time, now it is mostly a pain! I rent more videos now or come to the PC and surf the net for entertainment. Thank heaven for Discovery, History Channel, Animal Planet, Turner Classic Movies and PBS but they are all getting in to the same pattern, just not as fast as most other channels. Thank you for allowing me to rant!

I don't pay any attention to it at all. It's all part of the medium now. Get used to it!!

Re: "The lower third"
Pretty soon it'll be half the screen. Ever notice how they remove all that crap when they want to show you the important stuff........like the commercials?

Re: "The lower third"
I feel the same way Chazzy - what really bothered me is when they made the tv guide channel an actual channel with shows.
I go there to see what I want to watch and often miss the channel I am looking for because the guide portion is so little and their show takes up so much space!! RRRR

Re: "The lower third"
It annoys me the most, when I'm trying to read subtitles at the bottom of the screen and this huge animated "logo" for another show pops up!

True.
I also hate watching a golf tournament and the logo blocks the view of the hole on the putt.

you have a point, there. Not to mention, if the captioning is on, you can actually understand what someone who mumbles is saying!
There is a down side to the captioning, though, lol, if the person doing the typing, say for a news feed or something live and they mess up and type the wrong thing.....

Re: "The lower third"
I'm pathetic, if I use the captioning feature, I find myself focusing on trying to read everthing and miss parts of the visuals...I'm legally blind, so reading too much subtitling or captioning gives me a headache.

Takes practice to read and see whats all going on tv especially with the caption on, etc.. I've got years of practice.

Re: "The lower third"
Kinda strange question...I'm assuming these new 6 by 9 screens are just as bad? Or even worst?

Re: "The lower third"
CNN programs can be so bad for it...they'll even tell you while reporting a story, they'll be showing video and point to something on the lower part of the screen telling you to look at it.....but ya can't!
There's this "tickertape" thingy going on there, ther's a rotaion of 3 or 4 line text going on, and a giant big ass animated logo or two...
