ornithology
Does anyone one else have a few bird feeders, bird baths, etc?
Anyone else enjoy just taking a few moments to pause and look at what shows up at your feeders?
I have 4 or 5 feeders, including the hummingbird feeder, a book on bird identifcation for those rare occasions when something unusual shows up, and a pair of binoculors too.

Re: ornithology
Nice to know I'm not alone in this hobby. Birdseed is a small expense compared to the enjoyment of having visitors all year long. My dog is just as fascinated as I am...the only time he starts barking is when the larger birds show up and start the "Bird Wars" with the finches and sparrows for the seeds. Most of the time he stares out of the patio door and his tail indicates the approximate number of birds at their "lunch counter".

Re: ornithology
I love watching birds! I feed them in the winter and they are so fun. I have 2 hummingbird feeders. I also have 3 bluebird houses on the way - can not wait to put those up as I have many bluebirds - just wish it would have been earlier in the season.
I also have a nest to the left of my front door as I go out. Barn Swallows. However, it is so fun watching the babies grow that I just don't have the heart to destroy the nest. I just have to clean the deck more often.

Re: ornithology
Ahhhh! I just love discovering a nest, and being able to watch as the mother broods, the eggs hatch, and being able to peek in on the chicks to check their growing up process!

Re: ornithology
I don't have enough fingers and toes to count all of the birds feeders! They're hanging from every tree in our yard, pretty much. We have 4 bird baths around the property. I love looking out the living room window and watching them take a bath... it's so funny I also have some garden ornaments that I put bird seed in for the squirrels. They nice and fat around these parts
I also have to mention... the butterflies this year are tremendous!! We have flowering bushes that are full of 'em! Not sure if the news was nationwide, but the next town over had a caterpillar invasion. They were covering the outside of people's houses! It was awesome!!
Ahhhhhhhhh, I absolutely LOVE nature

Re: ornithology
Nature is dope!!!
This past week it's been the rather rare stop over year for the migrating Rosebreasted Grosbeaks!
Mourning doves are the sweetest things but such a sad song they have.

Re: ornithology
I have two bird baths...
About a week ago there was a baby cardinal in my yard, he "flew" up to the top canopy of the swing and just fluttered there, his feathers still gray but with a red tint...yesterday he was fluttering about and most of his feathers were red with a peppering of gray still left, it was the coolest thing to see him flitting about, so much more confident than he had been before, it was very cool.

Re: ornithology
I just love the hummingbirds although I only get maybe at the most 6 or 7 at my feeder...I've heard they prefer pure cane sugar, and not the cheaper sugar made from sugar beets.
I've got so many blue birds this year, it's the first year I've seen any, and so far one oriole.

Ilove watching all the birds that frequent my feeders.Guess redbirds wouldbe my favorite but blue birds are so cool. After watering flowers the other afternoon a pair of blue birds were splashing in a puddle. The squirrels are neat to watch but are very good theives also. Sometimes my cat stalks them. Has never caught one yet Yes nature is addicting.

Re: ornithology
I have 2 hummer feeders... one on the front porch and one on the back. My daughter stood with her face 6 inches away from one of them and they came right up to it. The ones around here are not afraid of us. I love listening to them chirp when competition comes around. We have tons of them.

Re: ornithology
4 regular feeders, 2 suet feeders for the woodpeckers, 2 thistle feeders, we had 2 hummingbird feeders last year, but they liked the mimosa tree better, and this year we're adding an oriole feeder. The goldfinches and the woodpeckers are my favorite.

It is so hard seeing Smitty's picture on here. I felt my heart skip a beat when I saw it. He was such a great guy.
