Metabolism..
Mine has completely gone to hell!! I don't get enough sleep, and haven't in years...it's totally wrecked my metabolism!
When I'm awake, I'm exhausted ...when I sleep it's no more than 4 hours at at time,
Coffee sets me off in the morning, but it's not enough to carry me all day...naps are a luxury and usually end up interrupted.
Does anyone use any energy products for days when they need a boost, maybe like energy drinks, or supplements...whats with all the "Hoodia" stuff I hear about so much? Anyone use that, does it help?
I'm getting desperate, I'm watching my life go by, and I'm too exhausted to do more than my daily "bare minimum"
I can't do the Dr. check up thing yet, not without health insurance, and that will be months from now!

Re: Metabolism..
Thanks Liz, I'll check into it...just one thing...how does it taste? Just curious, I'm getting desperate enough to drink used motor oil if I though it would help!
I used to have a fantastic metabolism! I can't change my lifestyle to improve it, I'm gonna have to investigate other ways to get it boosted up a little.
Right now, I've been up for only 4 hours, and I'm so exhausted that I'm nearly in tears!! It's such a horrible helpless feeling,...really sucks.

Thanks to me being so hyper,I don't require a lot of sleep,, my metabolism is fast, but the down side is I burn blood sugar faster than i should, so I MUST eat 3 meals a day & drink lots of fluids or I pass out

Re: Metabolism..
Awwww... I use to be that way too! I could get by on less sleep, cuz when my body told me it was time to catch up a little, I would, I use to have such a great high gear metablolism...but I can't control so much in my life right now, I can't sleep when my body tells me too, and it's really fucking me up bad!

Re: Metabolism..
it tastes like sweet grass. i used to be able to stomach it without a chaser. however, kelly od'd me on it when i was really sick and i threw it up. you know that after you throw something up it's near impossible to ever consume it again. in my case, i have to.

I do the daily multi vitamin thing already, and it has helped, ever so slightly...

Re: Metabolism..
Chazzy, I felt the same way for quite some time so last summer I modified my and have that cutting down on carbs (potatoes, pasta, rice, bread) and getting my protien from sources other than all meat has helped a great deal...for instance, instead of eating meat at every meal I eat raw almonds and pistachios (they have to be raw, roasting and salting depleats them of their nutrients). I try to get most of my carbs from things like...I know, I know, cheerios (or orange juice)...one of my favorite snacks is cheerios, almonds, pistachios and dried cranberries.
I also built up from little excercise to walking ten minutes...twenty minutes...thirty minutes and now I'm at forty-five minutes to an hour of interval training on my treadmill or bike...when I'm having a hard time sleeping I use a yoga technique alternate nostril breathing...I can explain in more detail if you can't find it online...
Good luck, not sleeping is a bitch...I had insomnia for nine months last year and it did take some radical changes for me to feel better.

Re: Metabolism..
Sorry, it's too late for me to go in details now, expect a more fulfilling Mooant answer in the next couple of days. Blame my friend that kept me up late playing video games...
The key to having lots of energy and boosting your metabolism is eating a variety of foods. In most people, this translates to eating more fruits and vegetables. Without those two food groups, we're missing many key minerals and a wonderful type of chemical called anti-oxidants, which plays an EXTREMELY important role in your metabolism...
g'night!

Re: Metabolism..
Ok, I'm going to keep this simple and not name large complex chemical names so everyone can follow along.
The metabolism is a wonderful mechanism that has been fully studied over the last few decades. We know how every chemical conversion takes place, and we've studied all genetic variants that exist and how they affect this wondrous system.
With the exception of a few key minerals and amino acids (amino acids make proteins) our metabolic system can generate anything we need. The reason for varying out food sources is to limit the strain on the system for producing the materials we don't consume ourselves. Just like with a car, if you rev the engine too high, it breaks down. On to the vegetarians...
The top reason to not be a vegan: You don't get all of the amino acids you need to survive unless you eat a LOT of beans. Less strict vegetarians can eat eggs as well, which contain all of the amino acids the body needs. As stupid of a life choice as it sounds, they actually have the right idea. Fruits, in particular, contain several chemical compounds that are called anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants act as a protective agent against, you guessed it, oxidants, also know as "free agents." We call them free agents because they have this intense need for more electrons, and they will break any chemical bonds that they come across to steal that electron.
Side note: If you purify an oxidant and throw it in water, it goes boom! That why people become chemists (damn pyromaniacs...)
Anti-oxidants work in two ways: if they come across a free agent, they will disable it. If a free agent damages anything in the cell, the anti-oxidant can fix the damaged part, but only in certain situations. So, eat your fruits and veggies!
Oh, and the people that only eat organically grown foods, the natural chemical defenses of most plants we eat are much more harsh to our bodies than the currently used pesticides.

You don't have much faith in our intelligence, huh? Is that what you're saying??

Re: Metabolism..
Would you prefer reading this in my posts all the time?
Acetyl-CoA + 3 NAD+ + FAD + GDP + Pi + 2 H2O → CoA-SH + 3 NADH + 3 H+ + FADH2 + GTP + 2 CO2
That's the simplest form of metabolism expressed in chemical shorthand. I'd spell it out, but I don't feel like looking this stuff up now.

Re: Metabolism..
It'd be so much sexier if I could post pictures. You should see the full size of the metabolic chart!
I'm telling you, it's huge. I'll see if I can find a web link of a picture to post. (It won't identify me so it should be ok, right?)

The official metabolic chart of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology! Too bad they didn't include the protein names, it's much better looking when they name all the proteins we know convert what chemical to what other chemical. It also shows how much we still don't know about the process when they do that.

Re: Metabolism..
Husband came home from work at about 2am, all buzzed up...he said some guy at work gave him a couple of his OTC diet pills, Hydroxycut...the advertise on TV allot...
Made me run straight out this morning and buy a bottle of the stuff,
I've thought about this option allot with my dead metab problem. I'm so caught in a cycle of not getting enough sleep, then I'm dragging through the day carrying a sleep deficit into the next nite....and it just goes on and on..
I don't like the idea of taking diet pills, but I'm gonna try it for a bit, just need to get one foot outside this horrible cycle!
