We need more.......
With this latest sickening episode at VIRGINIA TECH, I can hear the screams for more gun control. Yeh, we don't have enough unenforced laws already.
First off, you can't legislate against some f**kin' love scorned limp-dick, that goes wacko. He either steals some guns or finds 'em somewhere and then calmly walks on a campus and proceeds to take out as many people as he can and then takes his own life. Sounds like some sort of a wanna be terrorist to me. How can you reason with someone bent on self destruction?

Re: We need more.......
What a shocking and horrifying incident this was!
High schools are one thing, but is it even possible to use security controls like metal detectors and such on a college campus that is composed of hundreds of buildings?

Re: We need more.......
Chazzy, they were saying on the news last night that it would be impossible to put metal detectors at every entrance..... can't remember the reasons... I was too busy bitching about Bill's point on gun control. They'll always blame the gun manufacturer, not the gunman

Re: We need more.......
Gun control is stupid. If they take them all away then only the criminals will have guns. I notice that here is zero coverage on that small town in Florida which mandated every homeowner have a gun in their home. Crime rate dropped to almost zero for burglary and robbery.....wonder why? Arizona used to permit and encourage carrying in plain sight. You checked guns in bars, banks and hospitals (as you should) and there was little problem with the guns or petty crime in Tucson where I lived (and carried a 38) for over a year.

Re: We need more.......
First they need to repel the concealed weapons law. If a person wants to carrying a weapon, Put'er out there for all the world to see. If more carried weapons then mishap those that are likely to cause harm to others will think twice before doing so.
NOW before someone gets on their high-horse let me say this. IF ONE, just ONE of them students had,had the opportunity to protect themselves that pitiful excuse for a human would not have killed as many as he did.
I don't have any place in my heart for someone that kills/hurts or maims because of rejection or because they don't get their way.
"To die in the name of love, is NOT the same as killing in the name of love."
Am I off subject? I don't know, this whole thing has sicken me. The media and bleeding heart liberal lawyers are having a hay day with this, everyone seems to be too busy pointing fingers at who's at fault.
My heart goes out to the families of those killed and wounded. Their lives have been altered forever.

Re: We need more.......
Agree with the idea of allowing every home to have a gun.
I'm all for guns, but really worry about some of the regular folks on the highways these days. Road rage is bad enough...then if you have an idiot with a gun.
Of course if the politicians would really put harsh sentences on those who violate such hideous acts of decency, then maybe things will be better.
Peace out!

Re: We need more.......
Gun control....ummmmm.....sure, I took a 360 degree look at the subject and I can come up with the usual pros and cons of it...
I do firmly belief that a felon or violent criminal just released from prison should not be able to jump right in and buy a gun easily. He can still buy one black market, but I rather it not be as easy for him to just walk in to a gun shop and pick one out.
I understand that.
I also understand the waiting period... can't have people losing their temper and buying a gun all in the same five minutes.
I understand that registering all guns purchased legitimately being extremely helpful in tracking down who shot who with who's gun.
I'm not sure that I can understand that gun control laws, or the lack of them, has much to do with the VT massacre.
I'll probably never understand the workings of a mind as disturbed as the shooter's.
I'll never understand why there always seems to be "the warning signs" and why they are always an after thought.

Re: We need more.......
It does sound like there were some really creepy writings that this kid did in English class. He was reported - but what do you do?? Where is the line drawn between freedom of speech and protecting what may or may not need protecting? Not everyone acts on demented thoughts. It is so confusing and scarey.

This thread was exactly that, a vehicle for discussion on this horrendous tragedy. Everything is on the table. Nothing is off topic.......

Chazzy... "I'm not sure that I can understand that gun control laws, or the lack of them, has much to do with the VT massacre."
It really doesn't in this case. The guy was here on a legitimate Visa. As such, legally able to buy both the guns and the ammunition. I saw an interview with the shop owner who sold it/them to him and he said everything was in order and raised no red flags, whatsoever.
That said, he was also on drugs for depression and had suicidal thoughts (or so I've seen and read).
Do drugs for depression only make it worse in some people, magnifying the very thing they are supposed to help? "Don't give someone who is suicidal depression drugs", I've heard it said.
How will you know? Most people who are depressed like that aren't going to tell you they are! Even a "professional" who is trained to look for the signs can miss them if the person is very good at hiding them. Maybe when he was referred to psychiatric care (did he even go?), he ought to have been locked up at that time, maybe his Visa yanked and sent back to his own country. Would we be violating his "civil rights" to do so? Or simply acting in the best interest of the future? Is there any way to know? Is there any legitimacy to that argument at all?
I don't know.

Re: We need more.......
Pepper you really covered it well. Where do we decide (or do we?) that someones behavior or mental state has "crossed the line" and who determines what that line is. I have lived in a less open society in the third world and the alternatives to our freedoms is very, very bad. We can always use hindsight and play the "shoulda, coulda, woulda" game as the media is prone to do but do we want to start locking people up? Who gets to determine who might be a "danger to society"? It is an imperfect system but NOTHING will prevent demented acts such as this. It seems to be without us giving up our freedom to some idiot or zealot who wants to "protect us from ourselves" there isn't a "foolproof" solution. Just vigilance! Be more aware of what is going on around you. We are all guilty of being very self-absorbed as we go about our lives in public places. Think about it!

Yeh, Mr. CHO was a l-i-t-t-l-e bit off his game, to say the least. Most of his fellow students thought he was a weirdo and just stayed the f**k away from him. That is a more than natural instinct. How were they to know this guy was a psychopath! They were too busy studying to worry about him. And those alleged plays he wrote? Who knew?
I work with a guy who walks around and every once in a while, just points to the sky for no reason! Is he a potential crazy?
Sh*t happens! People f**kin' lose it sometimes! I just hope and pray I'm not present when it hits the fan.........
