Contest or Comply?
Are you one to check your bills thoroughly and contest charges, even if they are for the smallest amount of money, or maybe only contest the ones that "matter"?
Do you just pay the fines for small traffic violations, or fight for your driving record?
Do you spend time on the phone with customer service departments, or consider your time more valuable than the issue?

Re: Contest or Comply?
I am not one to contest things financial, but my wife? She's a terror when it comes to things when she feels she was wronged. She'll get on the phone and beat the offending party down 'til they give in. She's a very calm and persuasive person. Just ask the the VP of SUBARU of AMERICA. She talked him into waving 3 lease payments for her all over a hub cap dispute. She also was in her element when she had NORTHWEST AIRLINES awarding her 100,000 frequent flyer miles and $250.00 cash and room charges paid, over a misplaced bag in LAS VEGAS.
She's good, real good. She could call you an asshole to your face without swearing and you wouldn't know it 'til minutes after your conversation was done. She's the master.....

She is the love of my life, a joy to know and be with. She keeps me in my place, wherever the hell that is! There is no one I'd rather vacation with than her. The girl can party!!!!
CHAZZY, I picture you being like her.......

Coincidentally....you kinda remind me of my husband, the good parts anyway! (not the bad things about him I complain about all the time here) Although I would call ya both "grumpy" sometimes...
Around here, it's the husband that I pass things on to to be dealt with...sometimes I would make a list of things (with the 800 number beside each entry) and when he would come home in a bad mood, hand him the list and let him take his agression and bad mood out on someone else!!!

I have my wife do the dirty work when it comes to dealing with "them"!! She's a master at it.... Very smooth and non-threatening. Me? I say the wrong thing at the wrong time! The next thing I hear on the other end is a dial tone.......

Re: Contest or Comply?
I normally contest things that are wrong. After all, I worked in retail for 15 years, so I know how to get what I think is right. I dont look for a free ride, I just want things to be fair.
Once I took my family out to dinner, we all ordered, everyone got their food except my wife. I was not very happy, but she kept me cool about it, and said that they probably just forgot, and would be there shortly. So I was going to wait like a gentelman would. She insisted that I eat while mine was hot. So I started eating, and when the waiter came back by, I asked him about her food. Everyone was just about finished when they brought her food out. Then they brought the check, and wanted to bill for everyting. I did not feel this was right, and asked the waiter. He said "yes, that is right", so I asked "do you think this is fair", and he stated "yes it is right and fair". So I asked for the manager, I explained to him what had happened, and he comped the whole meal. But I told him that that was unacceptable, and that I was going to pay for all but my wifes. And he was very surprised, needless to say, we have never eaten ther since, and now they are closed down.

Re: Contest or Comply?
I still believe in the old way of "the customer is always right" Troybuilt...regardless of what side I'm on.
I do ebay auctions allot, and I do have my own short little complaint and return policy posted on every auction, I think it's a good policy for me and the bidders.
But if anyone ever (which is rare in my five years of doing it)makes a legitmate complaint, I refund in full, including immediatly...my 100 per cent satisfaction rating means allot to me!

Re: Contest or Comply?
Chazzy, I believe in satisfaction as well, but there is a right way and a wrong way about getting what you want when you are on the bad end of the situation. Like if you are ugly to me, you would get nothing.

Amen, at my office I'm known for being incredibly nice to even difficult people (they always give me the tough calls). As a rule of thumb if someone calls they have missed an important deadline and if they are nice I bend over backwards to help them out...if they are ugly then I am a stickler for the rules...and if they are ugly to my assistant before they talk to me then I'm a brick wall. If our records are incorrect for some reason I am an ass kisser extrodinaire...LOL...OK...maybe not but I'm very apologetic.

Re: Contest or Comply?
Oh yes, not arguing with ya there, if someone is irrate, I offer them a quick more-than-fair solution, if they continue to rant, or get namecalling mean, the deal is off..I don't have to take that shit from anyone, I'll discuss it again with them if they can do it in a calm manner....and I don't really have a problem handling something in a sane adult manner, like you did in the resturaunt.

Re: Contest or Comply?
I ran a muffler shop for 25 years and as you can imagine, I had my share of disgruntled customers. Hell, it's bound to happen. I can only remember a few problems that I could not settle. I would always ask the angry customer to return to my shop so we could discuss the problem man to man. I was always one to admit a problem right away. Even if I was right, I would usually give in a bit, just to make peace. That way, that customer couldn't in good conscious, bad mouth my business. What's that old saying? Good news travels but bad news travels fast!!

Re: Contest or Comply?
Ahhhh...it happens and it's almost always about little misunderstandings...sometimes Abs will lock a thread, and some will assume I did it, once he came in and added a big "READ ME" in capital letters to one of my topic titles, and a few got really pissed off at me "For telling what they have to read" Caught hell for a week because of that silly ole "READ ME!!"
Once I asked someone who typed thier post all in capital letters,(doesn't bother me, but can be a pet peeve of abs's) if they were compensating for eyesight problems, I caught hell for that for a week too from a few people, a few people that didn't realize that I'm freakin' legally blind, and would not ever, or was "making fun" of this poster, but was just curious to know if he and I had something in common and that because I am visually handicapped myself, I often recognize when others like me use simple tricks and measures to help compensate for it.
And sometimes, sadly...things end up all messed up because a little bit of miscommunication ends up being a rumor starter...
