Flora and fauna
How much of the natural world around you do you recognize?
Do you just see birds, or can you identify allot of the different species?
Do you know the names (Latin or cutesy wutesy)names of the wildflowers or garden flowers?
Do you know a Locust tree from a Sumac?
When you pick up a spider with toilet paper out of your bathtub and put him outside, do you know what kind of spider it is?
Can you tell the difference between a Gallynapper and a very large mosquito? The difference between a king snake and a copperhead? The difference between a titmouse and a field mouse? The difference between a toad and a frog, a turtle and a tortoise, a lizard and a salamander?

Re: Flora and fauna
D. All of the above...
Except for the "latin names." That's my hubby's territory.

Re: Flora and fauna
I can do OK with naming some birds, like I know the difference between a bold eagle and a robin?
Flowers and tree's is so so, but no latin stuff, I have a hard enough time with english.
Snakes and the like, along with some larger creaters I am just fine with. We have only one poisious snake here, and they are very far and few between. They mainly hover around the river bluffs and cliffs of the St. Croix and Mississippi rivers.

Re: Flora and fauna
Birds, I know...and if one out of the ordinary shows up in my yard, I do have a reference book handy and will look it up right away!

Re: Flora and fauna
I have no problem with the trees and bushes. I'm a Biology Major and one of my independent research projects was identifying trees in a local park.
I don't know the birds too well, but insects and rodents aren't too difficult for me with the common names.

I do quite well, being a nature lover anyway, but also with the time in Survivor training, I know most reptiles & rodents, & animals. Know most trees & plants. Some birds I don't know so well though.

Re: Flora and fauna
I can tell you the difference between a few things, most native to my area...because you don't plant anything here that the deer will eat or that isn't drought resistant.
Otherwise, my best bet is telling you the difference between Macy's and Neiman Marcos...

Re: Flora and fauna
Oh, NRG4U, I kinda thought that you would be able to answer this one!
From living way out in the country, I do know most of the plants and animals I share the land with, I definitely can recognize poison ivy, and have done allot of native flower landscaping.
I know the sound of bobcats mating near the gully that was just yards away from my backdoor.(There's a very un-nerving noise!) I learned to live with wolf spiders, cuz I know they kept my home free of more dangerous spiders. I learned to live with black snakes knowing their presence keeps down the population of copperheads and mice. I learned to forage for food, and with only a few channels of TV out there, I learned to find entertainment in the woods, forest, creeks and caves.

Re: Flora and fauna
I love learning about it all too, HBG! I don't bother with the latin names, they just aren't as cute or romantic as the common names, like Dutchman's Breeches, Lady Slippers, Baby's Breath, etc....!

The best thing about learning new stuff, is when it comes from the students at school, you will be surprised what you learn from them!!!! lol

Chances are you are refering to King snakes, often mistaken for black snakes. Very long, 6-8 feet stand up like a cobra. But they are harmless curious snakes. I've had 8-9 of them stand up like cobras just to watch me eat a sandwich once, while I was taking photos of wildlife, got a very cool pic from it, they were all less than 5 feet from me, very cool stuff

Re: Flora and fauna
I do love all the stories, fairy tales and legends that go with the common names of wildflowers, like Queen Annes' Lace...
