Role models
What do you think, we expect it of politicians, and religious leaders...but should someone who markets their talents in movies and music to teens, preteens, and younger be out drinking half the time, and rehabbing the other half?
Should college athletes accept their role as a "role model" along with their high dollar contacts when they step up to professional sports?
Should it matter that Miss USA, Miss Universe, or the next American Idol has nude, semi-nude photos or photos with sexual content on the Internet?
Should anyone be expected to live up to a higher moral standard, or does anyone and everyone have the right to behave anyway they choose, regardless of their career choices?

Re: Role models
excellent question, however, i don't think there is anything that can be done to change the moral compass of today's trend setters. it's the times we live in. everything bad seems to be acceptable. to be bad is a good thing anymore. these wouldn't be issues if we lived in the 50s.

Re: Role models
I feel if there is a likely hood you are going to be a role model to children and teenagers, then behave like one. Good example size 0 models, NOT A GOOD ROLE MODEL!!!!! But i won't go there as i may say something they will regret!!!

I agree, the ones who starve themselves to look that way, not good at all. On the other hand, people have seen me and automatically assumed because I wear a size 0-2 (depending on the maker) that I am bulemic or anorexic, when it could not be further from the truth. Ask Warren, I can out-eat HIM if I put my mind to it, lol, I love food!
and yes, I do think actors, and sports figures need to be held responsible for their actions. 1) I don't want to know their politics
2) I don't care about their sex life
and 3
Keep your mouth shut if you haven't anything positive to say.
Great example of all three...Harrison Ford. I know he's environmentally aware, but I don't hear him shouting it to the world, he just does it, no fanfare
other than his love affair with Callista Lockhart, when have you heard about his love life?

Hun you have an amazing figure, you look healthy as well, unlike these models. You should be the role model for all up and coming new models.

Re: Role models
people should be held accountable for what they get paid to do. if its basketball then thats what they should worry about, not whether they are providing a role model for kids. granted if they want to be the best person they can be for their own sake they'd automatically fill the role model role.
i dont think we need to pressure actors and such into fitting the role model image... kids choose role models based on their own inexperienced values (values imprinted from the parents). raise your kids right and they'll choose true role models on their own with out "forcing" someone to play the part.

Re: Role models
I must say I'm torn on this...how can we expect a high school student that has lived a deprived life and not necessarily had strong role models to be thrust into the world with millions of dollars because suddenly they are professional athletes...chances are their role models aren't the cream of the crop...hence the Kobe Bryants (ok...he wasn't proven guilty but suspicion still exists) of the world.
When out partying and being wild these people are acting out of impulsiveness...hello Britney Spears...
I think the people that are expected to be role models like teachers, coaches, and church leaders put themselves out there...politicians...LOL...usually come from a small little town, are charismatic and are no different from rocks stars in the grand scheme of things...the dealbreaker there is that these people are making our laws and should be held accountable for bad behavior...if someone makes a bad movie we don't go see the next one...if a lawmaker votes a way we don't like it takes YEARS to get them out of office...

i really believe there are a lot more good role models out there then we think...its just the bad ones..like Kobe Bryant and Britney Spears etc..get the press..
...as for lawmakers..that's a different story..there should be a "code of conduct" which they take an oath of upon entering office. thus, violating the code would enable those that voted them in to vote them out...but, our history is from day one is clouded with shady politics...just ask the Brits!!

Re: Role models
I may be out of the "sports loop," and somebody correct me if I'm wrong... but doesn't it seem like it's always the "men" doin' some stupid shit and bein' in the spotlight and not the "women" athletes? Mia Hamm, women in the WNBA, etc.....
I'd definitely consider some of them fairly good role models.

Re: Role models
Tropi...I agree...
This is why we have to teach our short people from the beginning that believing in themselves is far greater than believing in someone else...i.e. the only person that is disappointed by behavior is yourself...a strange little thing called accountability for yourself...
