ultimatums
How do you feel about them, how do you react to them?
Do you often give them, or only use them as a last resort to fix a problem?
Does having one given to you make you comply and try, or just rebel?

I will rebel against them, i do try them with my students, but tell them it's a choice. They still don't take any notice!!!!

Hate it when someone does that...and usually rebel just to piss um off. Dont use them much...people are going to do what the hell they want to anyway..so why waste your breath and possibly cause a bigger load of crap !!!

I don't respond well to ultimatums, or threats. Given one of those will show them that I do have a temper. Asking me will have a more positive result.

You brought up a good point there...nothing constructive can come from someone giving an empty ultimatum with no intention of backing it up with all it's consequences.

I can only think of one ultimatum I've ever given someone, I'm not into pressuring someone to go one direction or another. I just wasn't going to live with someone while they were involved with another...I think way to highly of ME to do that...
I don't think good things come from forcing someone to do something they don't want to (unless in parenting then sometimes you don't have a choice). As much as I love to manipulate situations you want someone to be with you in life's decisions, not against you...plus, if you are nice enough and convincing enough people see things your way...LOL. I weeded out many a friend because they tried to make me do something...not gonna happen...

if its just the everyday non important kind like "i'm going to such-n-such, you can either come with or sit on your lazy ass all day" no big deal. i give them and take them with out notice.
if it involves emotions of some sort and is intended as a way to later cast the blame on me for a decision they have already made... i tend to go with the third choice of "fuck that(you), i'm going fishing." and i have never given on to date.

The ultimatums I have gotten were many many years ago, ussually in honky tonk bars and always somehow managed to have Bond money attached to them,,,

I only use them at home in a fun way.   But at work, if I give one, it WILL be backed up, and they usually feel the pain that comes with it.
