Legally blind..
Anyone know anything about this from a personal experience with themselves or someone close to them?
I've always...always been "legally blind" with un-corrected vision, but thought I functioned very well with corrected vision.
Today I got an eye exam so I could get my contact lens prescription, and the Dr. tells me that I barely made it, barely missed LOSING MY DRIVER'S LICENSE!
I've dealt with my severe vision problems all my life, I had always thought that my corrected vision is what counted at the DMV and I'm in shock that I could possible lose my privelege to drive if my uncorrected vision gets just a teeny bit worse.

Coming from a family with lots of eye issues I feel your pain sweetie. My eyes are going down hill pretty fast as well.

Re: Legally blind..
There is a fine line there hon. They want to know how much or what type of correction you need. They check your vision without the corrective lenses to see how your vision is to the side, how fast you focus & how much light is required to see. Every state is a little different, as to where that fine line is. Thats about as much as I know about it. Glad ya made it though.

Re: Legally blind..
I knew someone who was legally blind in his left eye, and night blind, and couldn't see very well in his right eye......Besides the fact that it just took ME a while to get it......Meaning I would always say look at this forgetting he couldn't see, He seemed to have dealt with it very well.....Although he still drives, he tends not to go out at night because its very hard for him to see, he has learned to use all of his other sences in ways you couldn't believe!......
Its a scary thought to know something that important could be taken away, but if we consistently remind ourselves that we have been blessed and all things happen for a reason, I believe that it makes things like that easier to deal with.....Where there is a will there is a way, and if its getting around town, I have no doubt that YOU will get to your destination!
I'm not sure that helped in any way, but just going through the time I have been through I have learned to be so thankful of the things I have, instead of thinking about the things I had!.....
Of course its a wonderful thing to see the world and have your Independence of getting around because your used it it......But if God forbid you loose that, you will learn to experience things in ways you never would have before!.....
Its just one of those days Im trying to say something, and not sure its coming out right!.....

Re: Legally blind..
I'm curious to know just how this all works...if my eye exam hits a certain "area" on some chart that tells my eye doctor I should not have a license, does he report me in some way? Am I then entered into some system on a computer so not to allow my a license at the DVM, although the DVM does their own testing?

Re: Legally blind..
Here in my state, the doctor mandated to let the DMV know that you are not able to see well enough to drive, even with glasses or contacts. The DMV does check your vision also, but they only check to see if your OK with or without glasses. Then your restricted to corrected vision. The same holds true if you have a seizure. Then doctor is also mandated to report that to the DMV also, then you will lose to your privilege to drive, until you can prove that you've not had a seizure for at least 6 months.

Re: Legally blind..
Thanks flp, I'll do some searches online for my state.
I kinda always knew this day would come for me, and I've always been able to adapt to all the restrictions that come with my vision.
Hopefully, I'll still have a few more years left before I face losing my license.

I have a few friends and family that are dealing with macro degenerative, both the wet and dry of it, along with others dealing with Retinopathy. Here Chazzy , you are in my thoughts.

Re: Legally blind..
I know I can deal and adapt with losing my license when that time comes, what upsets me most about not being able to drive is that my parents are old enough now, and have health problems and I do worry about not being able to make that half an hour drive to them when they need me.
