Again and again and.........
Three more stupid f**ks and a labrador retriever, made their way up MT HOOD last week to conquer that peak. The dog came away as the brains of that group.
What's with these tree huggin', head in the sky, dick wads, who will defend to the death, the right of any climbers who have scaled a rock wall at SIX FLAGS, to declare themselves expert enough to attempt to scale MT HOOD in f**king winter??? Am I missing something??
An idiot spokesman for some of these pretenders, was recently on TV, stressing the inalienable right of anyone who wanted to attempt a climb, to be given the opportunity to do so as long as they have GPS locators, with no financial liability in case they have to be rescued.
When pressed on the costs of operation of the helicopters ($2000/hr) and to the local government ($5000/day) needed to aid in the rescue of these most recent anal orifices, he did not attempt to rationalize the costs associated.
Possibly the climbing party should sign a contract stating their financial liability for any rescue costs such as helicopters, ect? Hey, if a corporation has a chemical spill, the corporation is liable for the entire clean-up. Been there, done that!!!
Ya wanna play, ya gotta pay!!!!!
...................and a good morning to you too.

Re: Again and again and.........
I couldn't agree with you more Bill, I was actually going to start a post on this. When I woke up hearing that on the news the other morning, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. If somebody asked me to do something so purposeless that 3 guys just died trying to do, I would be running the other way. What a bunch of waterheads!

Re: Again and again and.........
What I said before, I'll stick to that...that anyone wanting to climb Mt. Hood should have to put down a humongous amount of money as a kind of security deposit.
This security deposit would go towards paying for your ass to get rescued if you should need it rescued, and if you get back down the mountain on your own, you would get that deposit back.

Re: Again and again and.........
No, they have the right to climb any stupid time they want.
But the taxpayers should have the right to collect from them-especially if they make very dumb decisions like climbing when a known storm is coming. Or there experience level is not where it should be.
I climbed Mt. Ranier over 15 yrs ago, but went with very experienced climbers and during the season to climb - and that is not the winter!

Re: Again and again and.........
Ya' know, it's sad that some people don't have insurance and the taxpayers end up fitting the hospital bills, etc.. when someone is affected or dies from a heart attack (eating greasy food), lung cancer (smoking), snake bite out on a hiking trail (It can happen to even EXPERIENCED hikers), and so on... My point is.. are you gonna put everyone down like that I could go on about this but I'll bite my tongue.

Re: Again and again and.........
Well, how's about a few legal disclaimers?
Some beaches post signs every few feet "No lifeguard on duty, swim at your own risk"

Re: Again and again and.........
Again I retreat to the argument of stupid people do stupid things. Yes, I have a right to climb that mountain but there is a great cost, both in money and human lives in my rescue in case I get caught up there. You just have to put a financial limit on that "right"!!
Approximate Costs
$5000/day.........cost to local govts to organize
rescue
$2500/hr..........Black Hawk helicopters to ferry rescuers
to and from rescue site

Re: Again and again and.........
I know that no one climbs Mt. Everest "on their own"...you have to go up with a team, and you're lead by an experienced climber, and the world's best sherpas(All this will cost each climber about 40,000 bucks), you acsend base camp by base camp, if you are not up to the next leg of the climb, you don't jeopordize the rest of the team, you must remain at that base camp. If the weather takes a turn, no one proceeds.
If you do go against the orders of a climb leader, and proceed on your own, there is NO resuce...it's impossible to rescue from Mt. Everest past a certain point there.
Climbers who do make it to the summit, will pass dead and dying climbers on their descent. No dead bodies are brought down from the moutain, and there's nothing that can be done for the dying.
Apparently, Mt. Hood does not have any mandatory programs for climbers like this.

Again, a well executed post sweetheart! Surprise?
I wasn't aware of the "rules of engagement" for a climbing team attempting MT EVEREST, other than the fees to the govt. of TIBET and the costs of the sherpas and the general rule of hiring nothing but locals for any support teams. I knew about the dead bodies strewn all over the mountain from failed climbs of the past. If that is not enough to skew your decision on whether to attempt a climb or not, I don't know what is!!
The wanna-bees of MT HOOD, have non of that to contend with while deciding to make an attempt on the highest peak in North America. They just call their employers, tell them they are taking a few sick days and then they tear it up, knowing full well there is a bunch of people ready to pull their ass out of the fire if it turns sour. Where's the responsibility man?

Re: Again and again and.........
I do agree with your point there, VB.
I do believe that the Mt. Everest climbers are a different people than the Mt. Hood climbers.
Aren't there laws and penalties for base or bungee jumpers who may or do, jump from our tallest buildings and highest bridges?
Maybe if Mt. Hood had organized(but expensive) team climbing only, and legal ramifications for anyone who tries to climb on their own.

I agree, the expense should be their own, not ours. They know the risks. When I fly those crazy stunts at air shows, I know the risks, accept them, & I sign a paper saying if anything should happen, it's all on me. Nobody is gonna pay my hospital/morgue expenses.

I love our "stupid driver" law here in AZ. If you drive into a clearly posted dangerous flooded area - you will be billed for the rescue. We will rescue you, but you will pay for the stupid decision to drive where everyone else avoided - just to try and get home 5 minutes sooner!
