guitar
one of my goals this year is to learn to play guitar. nothing great just the basics. i've tried and failed a few times back in my high school days (mainly because of lack of dedication). anyhow just hoping some musical god(dess) could kind of chime in and let me know what they think the "right" first step should be to get moving on it.
i have a.. dont even know what it is... acoustic guitar. anyhow music is the one subject i hated in school so.. LMAO. tips??

Re: guitar
Yes, I have some advice. Teaching medias are much better than they used to be, now you can get videos & cd, & watch what they are doing as they guide you step by step. Learning to read music would help too, but even the videos wil have you playing songs by chords witin a week. Really they are way gooder than the teaching methods before. I'm doing the same thing, learning the guitar

Re: guitar
I tried to learn guitar in school and failed, far to many other things to learn!!! But i did however learn a few years ago, and found it easier. I did start off with a teacher, once he had taught me the basics i continued on my own with a dvd and a book. I do still go to my teacher so he can see how i'm doing and for any help i need. So it might be worth going to a guitar teacher first then see how you feel about going it alone. Good luck hun.

Re: guitar
I also tried to learn guitar, but also failed. I tried with nylon strings, steel strings, even a twelve string guitar. It was always way to painful on my fingers, so I gave up. But I do still have a very nice six string and twelve string guitar. I also learned to play the piano, but haven't tickled the ivory in a very long time. But will take it up again just soon as the kids finish moving out and I can get a nice electric piano.

Re: guitar
FLP is right. It is going to be very painful on your fingers until they become callus like. As far as reading music, I loved it in school and always did good on tests and reading musical notes. My brother, on the other hand, couldn't read music to save his life! He tried over and over again. Never could get it. My advice would be to study the notes, find you a CD or DVD with instructions on notes and try that. If you can't seem to get it, play by ear! That's what my brother and my uncle did to learn. They're awesome guitar players now. Just stick with it and good luck!!

Re: guitar
I am self-taught and know I have a lot of bad habits and technical errors in my playing. Here a few suggestions for you to consider: 1) Check with local music stores for suggestions to find an instructor, most have a large number of people to choose from. 2) Late night TV had an interesting infomercial that I saw last night. Estaban has a 7 DVD course, an acoustic guitar with electric pickups and EQ and an amp for approx $200 (4 X $49.95). 3) You might see if you can find a cheap acoustic guitar at a local pawn shop for a "starter" instrument.
Above all practice a little every day until your fingers "toughen up". Calloused fingertips to hold the strings against the frets are a must. Nothing is easy!

Re: guitar
Calloused fingers are good, bcb, but you'll also be stretching them in ways you probably aren't used to. Take their advice and work them on the frets as much as you can.
