Actor Al Freeman Jr., perhaps best known for his portrayal of Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad in Spike Lee's 1992 film "Malcolm X," has died, Howard University said on Friday, August 10, 2012.
"It is with tremendous sadness that the passing of our beloved Professor Al Freeman, Jr. is confirmed," Kim James Bey, chair of the university's theater department said in a statement. Freeman was a faculty member at the university.
She gave no details about the death of Freeman, who was 78 and taught acting at the Washington-based university, but said a statement would be issued later.
Freeman's long career in film, television and theater included an enduring role playing police Captain Ed Hall on the TV soap opera "One Life to Live" from 1972 through 1987.
He was credited with being the first African American to win a Daytime Emmy Award for outstanding lead actor for his work on the soap opera, a prize he was awarded in 1979.
Freeman's theater credits included a starring role on Broadway in James Baldwin's "Blues for Mister Charlie" in 1964.

Ron Palillo -- the actor who played Horshack on "Welcome Back, Kotter" -- died this morning at his home near Palm Springs. He was 63.
The details surrounding Palillo's death are unclear.
Palillo was known for calling out, "Ooh ooh ooh, Mr. Kotter" as one of the Sweathogs on the show ... which he appeared on with John Travolta from 1975 to 1979.
After Kotter, Palillo appeared in "Laverne and Shirley" and voiced a character on the Disney cartoon, "Darkwing Duck."
Palillo's "Kotter" co-star Robert Hegyes -- who played Epstein -- passed away earlier this year after suffering a heart attack.

Tony Scott, director of such Hollywood hits as "Top Gun," ''Days of Thunder" and "Beverly Hills Cop II," died Sunday after jumping from a Los Angeles County bridge, authorities said.
The 68-year-old Scott's death was being investigated as a suicide, Los Angeles County Coroner's Lt. Joe Bale said.
"I can confirm that Tony Scott has passed away. The family asks that their privacy is respected at this time," Scott's spokesman, Simon Halls, said in a statement.
Several people called 911 around 12:35 p.m. to report that someone had jumped from the Vincent Thomas Bridge spanning San Pedro and Terminal Island in Los Angeles Harbor, according to Los Angeles police Lt. Tim Nordquist.
A dive team with Los Angeles Port Police pulled the body from the murky water several hours later, Nordquist said. Scott's body was taken to a dock in Wilmington.

Phillips was inspired to write the song by the large influx of young people to San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district and by the "gentleness and the love that he felt in the hippie movement,"
McKenzie died Saturday at his home in Silver Lake, said Matt Pook, a longtime friend and neighbor. He had been ill with Guillain Barre Syndrome, a disease affecting the nervous system.

Jerry Nelson, the puppeteer known for playing the instructional Count von Count on Sesame Street, died Thursday of unspecified causes, according to CBC Radio-Canada. He was 78.
Besides the non-threatening vampire, Nelson, a Tulsa native who grew up in Washington, D.C., also performed Gobo Fraggle on Fraggle Rock and The Muppet Show's Sgt. Floyd Pepper of the Electric Mayhem band; "Pigs in Space" stalwart Dr. Julius Strangepork; Kermit the Frog's nephew Robin; and Gonzo's girlfriend Camilla the Chicken, among other roles, says the site.

Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, has died today. He was 82.
Armstrong underwent heart surgery earlier this month, just a few days after his birthday.
Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 spacecraft, which landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. During his three-hour walk on the moon's surface, he radioed back the famous line, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

This has been a sad week. The last three people we have lost in the this thread have made great contributions to this country all in very different ways but will all be missed.
There is a great post on Facebook with a picture of the Count crying with his head bowed.
I have to admit I am pretty pissed that my TV has been all day and didn't hear about Neil Armstrong but they blast it all over the damn place if Lindsey Lohan goes out and gets a ticket. This world is fucked up!

So reporting his death ... AGAIN ... Does this mean rumors of his death had been greatly exaggerated?
In honesty, I kept seeing this post in FB that shared about his passing, and I kept thinking... didn't he die a while back. So I had to google it to find out. So no big deal Kiss... in fact, it makes you more like the rest of us.... oh so very human.. At least he's not still alive, and got reported as dead. That would be bad.

Yes, I read up on her. She was from Lima, Ohio. She was 5'1", with six children. The character "Fang' in her jokes represented her husband. I'd forgotten all about Fang.

Sun Myung Moon - A self-proclaimed messiah and founder of the Unification Church has died in South Korea. Moon died in South Korea the morning of 3 September 2012 at the age of 92. He died at a church-owned hospital near his home in Gapyeong, northeast of Seoul. He had been under treatment for pneumonia.

Guitarist Mark Abrahamian, who performed with Starship featuring Mickey Thomas, is dead at age 46, the band announced on Monday. He reportedly passed away due to a heart attack following a performance on September 2.

NFL legend Art Modell -- who owned the Cleveland Browns, which became the Baltimore Ravens -- died this morning ... this according to a rep for the Ravens.
Modell -- who was 87-years-old -- had been admitted to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland on Wednesday ... but it's unclear why.
Modell was a key figure in negotiating the NFL's huge contracts with the TV networks over the years ... and played a major role in the creation and success of Monday Night Football.
Modell owned the Browns from 1961 to 1995 ... and then moved the organization to Baltimore, where they became the Ravens ... and helped put together the Super Bowl team of 2000.
He sold the team in 2004, but still retained a 1% ownership and kept an office at Ravens headquarters.
