Oh WELL..........
My wife was informed recently that the company (pen balls and precision balls for bearings) she has been employed with for 30 years (2/1/07), is consolidating it's CONNECTICUT operations and moving everything to it's corporate headquarters in CUMMING, GEORGIA. She was offered a similar position at corporate (inside sales, sales logistics and customer service), but declined as she wants a change of venue. She wasn't shocked at the news because foreign manufacturing has been kicking their ass for quite a while anyway.
She has been contacted by the competition about her working for them but she is no hurry to jump at any of the offers because if she were to leave before 8/31/07 (pink slip day), she would forfeit 8 months severance plus a possible 2 1/2 years worth of unemployment benefits (complicated federal and state programs due to job loss caused by foreign competition). Any new position would have to rival that.
You know, actually, this change of events is a godsend! My wife was getting tired of the same-o, same-o anyway. She had voiced her feelings quite a bit the last few years. She never complained about her salary and travel perks, but she wanted to spread her wings a bit, maybe work somewhere nice, somewhere warm! A competitor has confided in her many times that he could guarantee her a similar position in SANTA MONICA, Ca. The only possible hindrance in us moving there would be the sky high housing costs!

Good plan to wait out and get the ol pink slip.
Cummings, GA is nice. I grew up around Atlanta, but the traffic (and associated polution) sucks. I really don't ever care to go back to live. To visit friends - yes. Just not to live.
On the other hand, I'll be moving to SoCal soon myself due to job re-location. It is damn expensive. We're talking about $800-$900K for a 3000'. Omg ! Heck, their garages are cost more than my home is here!!!!!

Anytime I lost a job due to overseas competition, etc...made me eligible for displaced worker programs...nutting like leaving behind a burn-out job, and signing up for a one or two year course of study that take me in a new direction!
