Ever had a REAL Christmas sleigh ride in the snow?
Not with a tractor or other mechanized machinery, but a real one with horses, (or even your mate naked in a harness pulling you through the white and drifted snow? )
oh yeah, I keep forgetting, "Ho, Ho, Ho!"

Re: Ever had a REAL Christmas sleigh ride in the snow?
Why yes I have Santa, thank you for asking. In 1973 with a dear lady in Baraboo, WI. We had a BIG flask of Jack Daniels, a fat "doobie" and 2 enchanting hours traversing through the woods in a genuine, horse-drawn snow sleigh. I'll never forget it! It was only supposed to be for an hour but the guy at the reins enjoyed our refreshments, "ETC."!
oh yeah, "Ho, ho, ho!"

Re: Ever had a REAL Christmas sleigh ride in the snow?
Good Thread Tung, given the season that is very quickly coming upon us, (and by the way Santa, now that I know who you are, I want every one of my toys back, they better still be in good shape too). I know everybody has this romantic vision of a good ole time horse drawn sleigh ride. For those of you who haven't had one, they really are pretty cool, even romantic. When I was growing up on a farm in Kansas, we raised & broke horses, but also, dad was always going to a sale & buying a broken down covered wagon, spring wagon, buggy, buck board, even a surrey once. (Surrey= a buggy with rubber around the wheels, better lights, fringe around the top, a rear window, nicer seats & fancier steps, for all you city folks) Only the well to doers could afford a surrey. Think of it in comparison like a Ford galaxie 500 to a decked out Caddilac. But I remember the day came up to me & told me to go with him & help load up this sleigh he had just bought. The fact that we didn't hook up to the trailer should have been my first clue. I was pretty excited, I'd always hoped dad would find a sleigh. When we pulled up to it, I was shocked. Where is the rest of it I asked. Dad replied, this is it. You paid how much for this?? To that he replied, "Don't get smart with me, I know what I paid" I knew it was time to shut up. There in this heap were the runners, some hand rails, & a frame, more closely resembeling a rusty pile of iron. Every winter we worked on one of these projects that dad kept finding. We would cut, steam, sand, oil & paint the wooden parts, put them together, & just as always, it had turned out looking like it did the day it was new. Dad even bought special harness for the sleigh, had to have those little bells ya'know. We rode that sleigh all over,& as word got around, the neighbors came over for rides, & friends from town came out too. And once a reporter from the newspaper in Topeka came out for some pictures, just to show the folks in Topeka, that sleighs were still being used. Well dad retired, sold his farm, & horses, all the buggies, & wagons, but I would not let him sell that sleigh. Now I own the sleigh, the harness.Even though I don't get to use it much, due to lack of enough snow anymore. But if any of you want to ride a sleigh, wait for a snow, come see me, & I promise you a old fashioned sleigh ride. Sorry, this turned out more like a novel than a post, but I just had to tell of my memory of long ago.

Re: Ever had a REAL Christmas sleigh ride in the snow?
Ma and I are in. I've been on several horses, been in several a wagons, mostly because I had to stack the hay, square bales. But I've never been on sleigh that was drawn with horses. Ma has never done anything on a farm.

Re: Ever had a REAL Christmas sleigh ride in the snow?
Great story NRG! Thanks for sharing that! Those old sleighs really are cool! As far as your toys, the really neat, cool ones (high-end collectibles) Santa had to sell on eBay to support Mrs. Claus's crack & whiskey habits, but I still have your ill-fitting, lob-sided, one-arm-longer-than-the-other sweater that your (blind as a stone, but well-meaning) great aunty knit for you in 1964. You're welcome to it, but you'll have to send me the money for shipping as I won't have room in my sleigh for it this year. Besides, it has an unpleasant odor and it's quite stiff & crusty, god knows what my little bastard elves have been using it for. But you can imagine as it was a lovely combination of mohair and very soft cashmir.

Pepper, if it's you I'm giving a ride to,I promise to have plenty of Irish creme. Just out of curiousity, just how much of that can you drink before you get to the point that you are drunk enough that a guy might get lucky? Not that I would anything like that of course, I just thought I should know your limit.

Then I could afford to go to the city, hire some male whore with a scorching case of herpes, to go fuck Mrs. Claus while you were away. That way, every time you were in the bathroom wacking your pud, cuz your missus was having a severe outbreak of herpes, leaving you to have to "Handle it yourself" so to speak

hon, if there's one thing I know about myself it's that you wouldn't have to get me drunk to get lucky. A lot of laughter and fun and a little creme (kind doesn't matter, I also like JD straight) will do juuuust fine in my book!

Well first of all young man , Santa hasn't gotten within 50 feet of the Missus since she picked up a good "dose" from Al Capone back in the '30s (that's when her whiskey drinkin' started). Santa has gotten quite adept and ambidextrous "handling it himself" in the last 75 years, thank you very much! The ambidextarity came about from the year that I had one or two martoonis too many and broke an arm whipping the elves a bit too enthusiastically. It's amazing what you can accomplish & perfect with the "lazy" arm and lots of repetition! Most of them survived I'm happy to report. (We had a bumper production that year!)

Re: Ever had a REAL Christmas sleigh ride in the snow?
Does this count? I used to walk two St Bernard dogs for the neighbors at five dollars a week. One snowy day, they saw a cat, and decided to give chase. Now two dogs at a combined weight of 300 lbs, and one boy at a total weight of 135 lbs, being dragged at a speed of 10 mph through someone's yard in the snow and not catching the stupid cat. I suppose I wouldn't of mind it much, if I had, had a sleigh...
