Discipline
How much discipline did you grow up with? When you were a child and screwed up, did you get a spanking or a "time out", get grounded or maybe lose some TV or phone privileges?
Did you have to eat everything on your plate at meal time and earn your allowance? Did you have certain consequences if you didn't do your chores around the house?

up until my junior high school days i got a fair amount of discipline via a spanking and it was always my mom that did all that my dad was more the type to talk it out

A German father and an Irish mother. Dad was from Bavaria & Mom was from County Clare (Clair?) in Ireland. Dad could whip out whatever belt he was wearing at the time faster than your eyes could follow or your feet could scramble. He really should have been a gunslinger in a previous life. Mom was gentler, more of a talker but didn't put up with back-talk or even "a face" and once in a while grabbed whatever was handy. " Yes, clean everything on your plate, I don't care if you don't like lima beans and liver. The poor kids would give their right arm for that!" I always thought they could keep their right arm if they'd only appear at our door and ask for the crap on my plate, but I wasn't about to bring that suggestion up with either of my parents.

I think the lack of discipline as a child has caused my demise as i've gotten older....now i look foreward to getting in trouble so i can be punished

I grew up in a very strict family, with a dad who had not been out of the army very long. There were no time outs,nor was there anything such as grounded till I was maybe a junior in high school. When punishment was served, you had to go to the tree & pick out the switch you were about to be spanked with, or a razor strop. Maybe thats why I was such a rebel in my younger years. Now I know that my parents were strict, but fair. I never got a whooping I didn't deserve.

My mother was very short tempered, so I got a few whacks on the butt growing up...dad was the gentle one, he worked so hard in the mines, long hours and swing shifts, that he just didn't want to spend any of his time with us punishing us, so it was all left up to mom.

We all got spankings when we were kids, usually from my dad. I feared him until I was a teenager... now I love and respect him.. we get along great. A lot of people that grew up getting spanked are afraid to have children for fear that they may continue the cycle. Sometimes you do, sometimes you don't. Sometimes when you do, as in my case, you're not as harsh as your parents were. My cousin was afraid to have kids because he was abused as a child (not profoundly abused). He has two daughters and is doing just fine.

Growing up it was most definitely very strick. If I screwed up, mom would give me a good wack with the "wooden spoon" then if we were really bad, and dad had to come home, it was like taking your life in your hands. But all in all, I turned out OK. I did discipline my kids, but I don't think I was nearly as bad as my dad.

I ran riot through many a library, even once or twice raising my voice loud enough to require a severe shushing from librarians.
I remember one time I didn't muck the horses stalls properly and Let me tell you, Dad made me go back out after dinner and muck those stalls right - or no books that night. Whew that was close.
