Cost of living...
In my area, you can buy a fairly new two bedroom, two bath for about $80,000 and up, a hundred year old "handy man's special" for as low as $16,000.

A gallon of milk costs about $2.40, a gallon of gas is now at $2.09.

Utilities...water runs me about $27, electric around $70 a month, and three months of trash pick up is $36.00.

The lowest paying jobs here start at around $6.75, most pay around $9.00 per hour, the best jobs pay anywhere from $11.45 to $16.75...

What's the basic costs of living in your area?

Re: Cost of living...
Its the taxes here. I just looked at a 2400 sq foot house that was listed at $94,000. However the property taxes were $6400 a year. The monthly tax payments would roughly equal the mortgage payment. And right now, regular gas is $2.47 a gallon and brand name cigarettes are around $47 a carton. Good Ole New York State. But hey? We've got Hillary! lol!

Bird's is the brand name for this bland runny custard desert that my Brit husband just loves....it's an English staple and pretty cheap there and pretty pricey in this country!

It's runny compared to our Jello pudding deserts, and to keep this "on topic" I'll mention that I usually purchase Jello puddings for about 50 cents a box!

Re: Cost of living...
Well now, we might have just found a topic that will help me lure a beautiful, intelligent, oversexed lady that just loves to skin deer, to Nebraska. Three years ago, I built a very nice 4 bedroom home, with a full finished basement for $85,000.00. 2 years ago I built a solid log House, (about the size of a ski, or hunting lodge) with a deck that had 1,800 sq. ft, on just the deck. The floor is heated with hot water, he wanted a river going through his property, so he dug one, hauled in I don't know how many semi-loads of river rock & pumps water up the hill , into the river so he can watch the river. 6 bedrooms, 18 totalrooms, for 1.25 million. You can buy a damn nice 3-4 bedroom home here for 50-85 thousand. Housing is very cheap here.

This was current exchange rate at the close of today:
1 US Dollar = 0.50593 British Pound

1 British Pound (GBP) = 1.97655 US Dollar (USD)

Now around here, a 3 bedroom, 2 bath, about 1500 finished square feet, around $200,000. And the housing prices is on the way down, about a year ago that same house would have been about $250,000+. Milk just over $3.00 per gallon. Gas as of today $2.19 gallon. Trash is about $19.00 per month. DSL Internet is around $25.00 a month. Minimum wage is $5.15, unless your a waitress/waiter then about $3.50 per hour. Average wage here is about $6.00 per hour, but if your drive to the cities you can get about $11.00 to $20.00. Electric for the average house, $60 month in summer and not much A/C running, to about $150 to $200 a month in winter. Taxes on the house above about $2500 a year homesteaded, $5500 non-homesteaded. Car insurance about $75.00+ a month.

So I suppose for a place like that, you have to have at least a college education to AFFORD a roof over your head and if you don't, you get a 'cheapie' that is actually probably consider best around here??
How much do they pay out there for starting wages anyways to be able to pay that much? You talking own or rent??

taxes for this same residence is $3500

91 or 93 octane gas is $2.45 a gallon at the cheaperst

Re: Cost of living...
My precious Folger's coffee is up to 9 bucks a can, I tried the cheaper labels and they are horrible! So I'm kinda mixing in the cheaper stuff to make the Folger's stretch a little further.

It's still cold and wintery, the heating oil tank is low, real low and haven't paid off the first tank yet so doesn't look like I can get a refill this year.

I watch HGTV's show "House Hunters"....it just amazes me how $150,000 home in one area of the country, is bigger, better and newer than a $750,000 home somewhere else!

The people that bought the house next door and fixed it up are asking a little over 160K for it! They paid 60 something K, I think. They'll never get that much... especially after they painted it a **** brown!

I was also a little disgusted with some house flippers that bought a house near me, they probably didn't pay more than 40K for a virtually untouched gorgeous 1920's craftsman style bungalow with original stained glass and top grade indoor wood work....they totally ruined it, the roof line was redone in a way that completely trashed the architectural lines of the house and a couple of Lowe's truckloads of cheap materials, they still sold it for nearly 140K....what use to be a beautiful piece of architectural art...is now just a cheap old remodeled house I can barely stand to look at...

Wheat, vegetables... everything's goin' up! A gallon of milk for 3.50 here would be on sale! It's around 4 bucks a gallon... Eggs are climbing to 2 bucks for a dozen large.. Gas is 3.59...

I would love to leave the politicians out of this but I would like to know what y'all think about their ideas about cutting out the taxes on gas for a day... Is one right in saying that it would really help, or is the other one right in thinking that it won't help in the long run.... what do y'all think???

Yea it would nice for a day if they would cut the taxes on gas for a day. However, its really only a election gimmick. Is it really worth it when you will only save a couple of bucks.
