Drunk drivers
I recently almost lost a loved one who was hit by a drunk driver. She is in hospital with a right leg broken in two places, a broken right arm, broken ribs and several cuts and bruises to her face and neck. The drunk driver ran a red light and hit her vehicle at the driver's door. This happened two Saturdays ago. She was in intensive care for several days. She was just allowed visitors this past weekend. The drunk driver died at the accident site.

She lives far away from me and so I have been unable to visit her and I am going through virtual hell. I heard about what happened from one of her friends yesterday morning.

I hear about these incidents daily but this is the first time a loved one has been a victim and it tears me apart. It is worse for me because I am so far away from where she is and I know she wants me there as much as I want to be there but certain circumstances just won't allow me to go at this time.

I just needed to share my feelings with you my friends. I do need to talk to someone.

Re: Drunk drivers
Talk all you want, it's just sick and sad that drunk driving is still such a problem...everyday, too many lives are ruined and lost.

Re: Drunk drivers
This guy took the easy way out by dying at the scene. He didn't have to witness the hurt he caused and the see the damage that he did. He won't have to face a judge and jury for his wrong doing. Her vehicle is a total write off but what is worse is that her life has been disrupted. A vehicle can be replaced but a person's life and well being can never be replaced. She could have lifelong problems as a result of her injuries and what so often happens is that other problems do surface afterward. I am both so angry right now and very worried. I don't know whether to cry or scream.

Re: Drunk drivers
I can feel your pain, because I have lost someone to drunk driving. Just remember that he may have taken the easy way out, but he also left others behind that are suffering a loss. And I am in no way trying to defend this guy for what he has done. With medical technology these days, they can fix many things.

Re: Drunk drivers
Can't say that I know what your going thru, as that has never happened to any one in my family. I have however had to go to the crash sites and pick up the pieces, literally. Hell one night spent hours walking up and down river banks looking for a passenger of a drunk driver who hit the bridge guard rail. The front windshield was laying on the other side of the river. He said that his girlfriend was riding with him. Anyway it turn out that he had just dropped her off, and she was laying on the couch at her house, passed out, but alive.

Re: Drunk drivers
She is back in intensive care. She needs surgery on her leg for a metal rod to be inserted to help it heal. I am going crazy here. She is so far away and I feel so helpless. I want to be there to visit her, talk with her and to hold her hand. She asked her friend to tell me that she sends her love to me and I reciprocated. I am not going to rest easily until I know that she is much better and of course once she phones and I can talk with her I will feel much better too.

Re: Drunk drivers
Best wishes to her for a speedy recovery and for you to keep it together until you can be with her. I'm sure many people here have included both of you in thoughts and prayers.

Re: Drunk drivers
Two women here in the buidling where I work took me aside just awhile ago and prayed with me for her. They asked God to help her to heal and to make her whole again. I was so moved by them that I am now certain that she will recover and be back to normal again. I know that God will answer our prayers and that she will be well again. I do not expect a miracle but I do believe that she will recover. I have faith in the lord our God.

Re: Drunk drivers
Even though it's proven time & time again, it's relived over & over why booze & cars make a bad combo. I was at a funeral a month & 1/2 ago. My cousins youngest boy & 3 friends decided it was a good idea to go racing their pickups after closing the bar. All were schoolmates, 27 years old

Re: Drunk drivers
Most people who drink believe they are invincible or they just don't have the capacity to think at all which is really sad. I have a very dear friend who lost her 6yr old granddaughter and the little girls mother to a drunk driver. Fortunately they both died instantly when he ran a red light and broadsided their car. The drunk driver walked away without a scratch and only received probation. What a horrible horrible shame.

She was taken from ICU and moved to a private room on Saturday December 30. She is beginning to feel better and can't wait to get out of bed.

Re: Drunk drivers
Glad to hear she is doing better. Keep the faith, it will help you to handle all that is thrown at you. It's never easy to be away from someone you care for when they're hurt. Hang in there and hopefully she shouldn't be in there much longer. Take Care.

absolutely!! it's a friggin crime and should be treated as such...there is NO excuse for drinking and driving...taxicabs are free in many communities if someone has excess libations and the night wears on...the price of a taxi if you pay yourself is small change compared to the cost of taking someone's life...and far, far too often the assailant driving drunk is spared their life while taking that of others or causing serious misery.

Ches, I'm glad that she is doing much better. You will be reunited soon with her. Make sure that you give her a big hug and kiss for us, and we will keep her in our prayers and thoughts.

Re: Drunk drivers
I thought I should update you on this.

She has been home now for a couple of months and a few weeks ago was able to walk without crutches. The metal rod from her knee had also been removed and she is now able to bend her knee and walk with little limping. The metal rod in her hip will be removed in June.

She had a minor accident on the weekend. She tripped over a garden hose and fell onto her back. She hurt her back and her buttocks are very sore but nothing was broken. Thank goodness.
