My Grandparent-In-Laws...
Their marriage was tumultuous in the beginning but she stuck beside him, they had seven children, he struggled with alcoholism but she kept getting up on Sunday mornings and going to church without him. I don't know when Grandpa decided to change but he did and he became a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, friend, and a deacon in their church. Their kitchen table became a place not only for their children, grandchildren, but a place for friends and church members alike. It was a beautiful relationship and the love between these to resonated to anyone who met them.
One night when they were lying in bed she was on the phone with her daughter in law, Grandpa kept tickling her and putting his cold feet on her and they were giggling. A few moments later the phone hit the floor and Grandpa realized something was wrong, she had suffered a stroke and he immediately called for assistance.
Family gathered at the hospital over the course of the next day, visitors and friends from church stopped in and Grandpa never left the room. He was speaking to the minister from their church when Grandpa looked up and said, "Excuse me, I need to go say goodbye to my beautiful wife." Grandpa walked across the room and held Gram's hand and said, "Go on, be at peace, I'll be with you soon, I love you." He kissed her forehead and then her lips and she took her last sigh, her last breath and went on to heaven knowing in her lifetime she had been loved by the man she stood by through thick and thin.
The greatest love story I've ever known was of two normal people who struggled through the difficult years and came out on the other side. Knowing when to love, knowing when to give more than you have at any given moment, and knowing when to say goodbye.
