Pleas of insanity
While watching or reading the news, I often ponder if it's possible for a "sane" person to commit a heinous crime?
(I do realize that that an insanity plea is nothing more than just a legal term.)
But these criminals...some lead a very normal sane life, and then commit a crime of passion, all in a fit of rage.
Some, like serial killers are so intelligent and definitely have enough sanity to keep killing, evading detection, covering up their crimes for such long periods of time.
Some there is no doubt that they are truly insane.
Can a person commit a horrid act like murder, and still be sane, completely sane?

Re: Pleas of insanity
Under the wrong circumstances, maybe we're all capable of committing murder, if our negative emotions get the better of us. As for sanity, who is really sane? I don't think I am.

Re: Pleas of insanity
Ok, here's my 2 cents....
If someone every harmed my kids, I'd have no problem whatsoever killing them. Now this might surprise y'all... I wouldn't plead "temporary insanity" because I'd know exactly what I was doing and why.
So I guess my answer would be yes, you could be completely sane and commit a heinous crime. But like kev said, who is really sane

I just love your "mama bear" instincts moon!
Gawd, if only more women were born with that.
I hate hearing yet another case on the news, where children were harmed because "mom" was single with shitty judgement, and had some boyfriend just move on into her home with her and her children!
I think of myself as a sane person, but I sure could see myself strangling the livin' crap out of these women.

Speaking of two cents... this may be a little , but there's been a story flying around here the past couple of days. A 57 year old man was arrested for assault on a minor at a Dunkin Donuts. (She was 17) His weapon of choice? A scalding cup of coffee... He aledgedly went knutz over a two cent tax increase in his usual coffee purchase. She suffers from third degree burns on her face and neck. Everyone the TV station interviewed, who knows this guy, said he's the nicest person anyone would want to meet usually... I wonder what he's going to claim at his arraignment?...

Re: Pleas of insanity
That's the part that is the scariest, I think...someone so sane, normal, nice can suddenly snap like that. It's scary cuz it reminds us that it happend to this "nice" man, could it also happen to a friend, a spouse, family member ...even us??

Re: Pleas of insanity
Yes. It is quite possible for sane people to commit heinous crimes. 1% of the people on this planet are without redemption and are capable of any act. These are the greedy and the evil, those who would steal just because they can, those who kill because they enjoy it.

Re: Pleas of insanity
my official opinion is that if you commit a serious crime there is no way in hell you were sane or you wouldnt have committed it.... no excuses needed, if you did it then suffer the consequences, period. pleading insanity of any form to a crime is like saying "i breathe air"

I can appreciate what you're saying and that is a popular viewpoint. Each case is dramatically different from another however. It can't be that "cut & dried" in a civilized society. There are too many variables and possibilities leading up to these situations. The lady in TX who drowned her kids in the tub had to be temporarily insane at the time. What mother (or father) would commit such an act? She was "normal" for years before that as far as she conducted herself and as those around her saw her. Was something drastically wrong in her head that no-one detected or did she "snap"? That was not a logical, cognitive thinking person at least at the time of the murders. Jeffrey Dahmer on the other hand, I'm sure was clinically insane but his crimes were so heinous and calculating and completely evil. His parents had signs for years that he was off his nut (I don't care what they have said). And in his case, since multiple evil acts occurred over years, then he's unargueably one of the worst and deserved whatever what dished out. But if there is a person who has been good and seemingly for no reason at some point goes over the edge, their case should be handled and considered differently. I don't believe that we can honestly say that we understand the human psyche the way we'd like to believe that we do or the way the so called professionals try to arrogantly convince the rest of us that they do. I also do not believe that we have even a 10% handle on understanding the complexity of the human psyche, but we'll continue the way we are because it expedites these matters for society and it's a lot easier this way.

What about the other 99%? Nobody is out of the woods on this one. Everyone is caple of any acts of violence. We just need a certain trigger to set us off. No amount of conditioning or upbringing can prevent us form commiting and unspeakable act.

I'm in complete agreement...someone touches one of my children I don't think there would be an ounce of them left to identify...as for insanity...anyone looking to hurt children should know that women like Moon and I aren't playing when it comes to our babies!!! Sally Field in an Eye for an Eye was my hero...
Does anyone have some Midol?

Re: Pleas of insanity
Although vigilante law is very, and I mean VERY appealing to most of us, especially when children are involved, it is still very wrong to me...it means a good person is most likely to be spending their life in prison for taking down a sick fuck..and that might make a few more children safer, but if you have more than one child, and you murder for one of them...that leaves the rest of your children out here with out your protection and love, while you, the good person rots away in a building full of other sick fucks. I don't like that scenario very well at all.
I do so admire people like John Walsh, Mark Klos, and the many other parents that have completely devoted themselves to doing something about all sick fucks, and sick fucks yet to come, and have not wasted their passion on just one sick fuck.

I agree completely with Moonhowler, as I have children and feel the same way!

Re: Re: Pleas of insanity
There are some lines in life that nobody can cross and when it comes to children and mine in particular-there will be hell to pay for someone doing something to someone innocent. Fortunately, i've been blessed with the physical skills/power needed to resolve these such issues and if by some chance I can't-theres always an equalizer. I consider myself a very kind and gentle person-a lover/not fighter type but if someone would do such a thing-heaven help them is ALL I can say. Thanks Chazzy for your similar feelings on this subject.

Re: Pleas of insanity
I've lost my temper on a few occasions and I even scared myself as to how crazy I got. A left over attribute from the cave-man days, I don't know ,but I sure as hell know this...Some dogs bite when threatened, and some cower... Natural instincts for self-preservation...????
