Roadside attractions..
Got any of this touristy folk art kind of things in your neck of the woods? Anything existing and advertised to take the traveler off the beaten path?
The world's largest ball of twine, a house that looks like a chicken, a bizarre museum?

Re: Roadside attractions..
Sure the beach counts! No wrong answers really...
We have allot of caves and caverns...the most popular is the Meramac Caverns.
All the billboards (some are painted on barn roofs) "Visit Meramac Caverns and see Jesse James's loot rock"
That 's where they claim ole Jesse and his gang went to divide and count up the loot.

In Hendley Nebr.--- Population, 80 which is 8 miles from me was where Kool-Aid was invented , his grandkids now live in a mansion in cambridge Nebr. 17 miles the other direction, ( the only mansion anywhere near here) In Grand Island, is a Mastadon Museum, this is where most mastadons are found..(a dinasouar) for anyone not familiar with the term, General Custer crossed the river here on his last ride, Massacure Canyon is about 50 miles away, where Souix Indians ran on foot all night & settled the score with the pawnee indians, chased & killed them for 8 miles. Only 17 Pawnee survived the attack, & only because they hauled ass to a Calvary detachment camped near there.

Re: Roadside attractions..
I live in the town where the first land battle of the civil war took place, they have a reenactment every year around June called The Blue and Gray Reunion, people come from all over to be in it,see it and take pictures of the covered bridge that served both sides. The people that travel the rest of the time stop and take pictures of it all year round,I guess people love covered bridges and history.

Caught another one on I-44 yesterday...
Bob's Gasoline Alley - Gasoline & Route 66 Memorabilia
A whole farm filled with old towering gas pumps, and all the fences are lined with old feed signs, road signs, and of course gasoline station signs...quite a site from the highway view!

Then you would love this resturant in Lincoln Nebr. Chazzy, just as you get on the interstate, this place has 100's of old pumps, signs, oil cans, brands I've never heard of before.& a old toy train that goes around the resturant. Pretty cool!!

If you hurry and take I-94/I-80 into NW Indiana near me, right off Lake & Porter countyline road and between Hwys 12 & 20 is a dead skunk on the side of the road. But you have to hurry as the ravens, crows and coyotes (and some of our residents) won't let it sit there very long! (ps: close your car windows just before you get there)

wow! what an amazing part of history near you. There are so many indian camps around here, it makes it a lot easier to find the artifacts that I love hunting for, problem is I'm running out of room in my house, & I may have to sell some of them, don't want to, but how many display cases can a person have full of rocks. Hasn't stopped me from going out to look for them though

geez NRG, hang on to as much of that as you can. Very few people possess that kind of stuff to boast about and somewhere down the line someone's going to offer you $$$ for it--- those kinds of things are going to become more rare & more valuable in the future because they are limited and as time passes, harder & harder to find.

I know the value of this stuff, not long ago I found a beaded breast plate, that the univ, of Nebr. dated between 7,500 & 8,000 yrs. old.(a indian with lots of clam shells was considered wealthy) I also have a collection that a friend & I bought years ago for a investment. The guy that dug them up was actually shot at by Poncho Villa, which is odd in the fact that when Poncho took a disliking to ya, you weren't around long. There are over 4,500 peices in the collection. anything from pottery, to spears, knives, & such, Even statues they carved the female form & were VERY detailed (if you know what I mean) & carved out designs in the handles & melted lead & filled the designs, (very unusual) . I don't dig artifacts for profit, but to save them. the one I bought with my friend, always was meant for a investment. The ones I dig, are different, but don't have room for many more.
