Guns
I've noticed in some of the threads, people talking about guns. Because I've never met anybody that actually owns a gun, I was curious about some of the following:
Do you own a gun for hunting or security?
Do you have to be trained, before you can buy one?
Are you worried that young children might get hold of it?
Do you carry it with you, at all the times?
What sort of maintenance is required?

Re: Guns
I own numerous guns. Most for security. Some I collect for their age, beauty, etc. You do not have to be trained to own guns. I would recommend that people get training. You can not own guns if you are a convicted felon. I have a handgun carry permit. It gives you the ability to carry it on you most of the time. I have a gun safe and always know where your guns are. I only keep the one i carry loaded. Not allot of maintenance required. I take mine apart and clean with gun oil.

Re: Guns
i own guns that are mostly just for recreation (target shooting), hunting, and a few that are family heirlooms.
only training i have is from my dad/etc.
i keep them out of the reach of little children.. but do encourage younger people who know me whether related or not to come shoot with me. I firmly believe someone who knows how to handle guns and is comfortable with them is FAR less likely to use one for not so good purposes.
I only carry them when hunting/on my way for an afternoon of plinking
just clean them up after each use etc.. nothing special.
i do not own a pistol.. not much reason for those other than to kill people. few historical/target shooting exceptions, just my opinion

Re: Guns
So it tends to be something that's introduced to you, by your dad or a close relative, like driving a car etc. I wish our gun laws were a little bit more relaxed, as long as responsible people with training use them, I can't see a problem.

Re: Guns
Pretty much what BCB said, except I do own a few handguns. They're for intruders... if I can't get to my shotgun first.

Re: Guns
We have ours for hunting. There are excellent hunter's safety courses for kids especially but adults also. We do not carry ours with us - only when going to target practice or hunt.

Re: Guns
I have a fairly large collection of guns, some because they are rare & have some value, some that have been handed down the family through the years, but most for hunting. To go hunting you must pass a hunters safety course. To own a rifle you must pass a background check by the law enforcement, to own a handgun you must have a background check, to carry concealed handgun, requires a background check plus pass a weapons shooting & safety course. I've been handling guns since I was very young, & my dad taught me to shoot well, break down & clean guns. After going to the Air Force S.A.S (Special Air Service) I can now break down, & clean a gun blindfolded.Every gun needs to be cleaned after every use. Even the guns I never shoot get cleaned once a month. Some of the cheaper guns not made from good material will show wear after some use, you must keep watch on this & replace worn parts to keep them in safe poerating condition.

Re: Guns
The statistics in the US show that more people have been killed by being subcribed improper medicines, wrongly Diagnosed, and faulty surgical proccedures than have been killed by Guns.

Re: Guns
I have shot guns, but do not nor wi I ever own one. The people I do know that own guns try to educate not only their own family in their useage, but others as well. This works wel from what I have seen. Many problems have arrisen from a man keeping his guns and their proper usage a secrect from his kids. Proper gun education is necessary especially if you have children in your home.

I have many guns.
I use them for many things, everything from target competition to hunting. I do not habitually carry one, but I do have concealed carry permits from several states.
Now that I have a child and another on the way, I am keeping them all locked and in a safe at all times. One is readily accessible with a special safe.

Re: Guns
we have a few guns, mostly for protection. (rhyun travels a lot for work and lil red and i stay home now) my personal favorite is my 45. i feel like dirty harry when i have it. (lol) plus the way i look at it is that if i ever have a need to use it on someone, (meaning that someone has broken in my house and is about to harm our lil red or me) the last thing i am going to be thinking about is getting a "good shot" at them. nope i just aim and shoot.
some people don't agree with it but we clean our guns in front of lil red. she knows what they are, and that they go "bang." but she also knows (at her young age) that she is NOT allowed to touch them either. (unless rhyun or i are right there with her) in my opinion it is important to be honest with children if there are guns in the house. is best to let them know what they are, as well as what they are for. this way in a few years she won't be curious with her friends, and there will be no "accidents." and yes, they ARE locked up. except the 45. but she can't get to that one.
my grammy has busted my ass a few times for not locking up the 45. has anyone ever heard of a burgular waiting for someone to unlock their gun cabinet (or safe) to get a gun so you can shoot them? (probably not)
i think that education is the key to preventing accidents with guns. (or curiosity that is) rhyun and i both have permits to carry a concealed hand gun. the only time i have ever taken one out of the house is if i am traveling overnight somewhere. when i travel (just lil red and i) i do the driving at night, and yes i take my 45 with me. other than that it stays at home unless we go to the shooting range or target practice.
rhyun has two other children (11 and 9) who live in texas when his son was 5 rhyun taught him how to shoot a gun. rhyun grew up in washinton state and that's how he grew up. me i grew up in texas so guns were a part of my life as well as a child. when lil red turns about 5 or so if she wants to i am all for her learning how to use a gun. that also goes back to the "if she knows what it is and how to use it there will be less chance of her wanting to play with them with her friends out of curiosity."
