this is messed up!!
this is about something that i read in the local newspaper a few weeks ago. a teacher was fired for assulting a student. (happens ALL the time) but this is what happened..
(the short version)
a 10 year old was on her cell phone with her mom during school hours. (the school has a VERY strick policy NO CELL PHONES!!) the girl's mom is a substitue teacher in the same school district. (so she KNOWS the policy) when the teacher told the girl to put the cell phone away, she refused. the girl's MOTHER told her NOT to give the cell phone to the teacher, and NOT to end the call. the student got mouthy with the teacher (while on the phone with her mother) the teacher attempted to take the cell phone, and in the process the student's wrist got bent. NOT HURT, NOT BROKEN, NOT BRUISED!! the end result, the teacher was FIRED for "assulting a student!!"
WTF?????????????? am i the only one who sees a problem here?? first of all the mother KNOWS the policy, then she TOLD her daughter to DISOBEY the teacher. the mother is still a substitute teacher in the school district. but yet the teacher (who had been teaching here for 5 years) was fired.
in my opinion it is a sad thing when a teacher has to battle with parents in enforcing the school's policies as well as the students.
am i wrong in thinking that this was blown WAY out of poportion?? and that the mother of the student should NOT be allowed to substitute teach anymore? without her input there IS a chance that the girl would have ended the call, and nothing would have happened.
i'm not even going to get started on the fact that a 10 year old does NOT need a cell phone. i didn't have one, and i am betting that most of you didn't have one. and guess what?? we turned out just fine! (or kinda anyway lol )

Re: this is messed up!!
Hmmm....everyone loses control, or makes a bad judgement, and although the teacher may be a very good person and teacher, I don't think she had the right to lay hands on the student or the student's property...I'm sure if the school has policies and rules about things such as cell phone use, they also have policies and rules about how to handle conflicts with students without laying hands on them.

chazzy that is a really good point. but i still think that it isn't right about the teacher being fired. when you were in school did a teacher ever grab anything out of your hand? they sure as frack did to me. but i guess that this is just example of how things have changed at school.
i remember getting a spanking at school and NOT wanting to go home.. because when i got home i was gonna be in worse trouble!!

Re: this is messed up!!
The teacher at one point, had the backing and support of the school behind her with the fact that it was the student and mother that were in violation. but that changed when the teacher's judgement also put her in violation of rules...they all three were very wrong, and it's just a shame that the teacher made a snap decision that put her on the same level as the mother and the student.
Very unfortunate...good teachers I'm sure are rare and underappreciated, I can't even begin to imagine what their daily life must be like dealing with faculty, board members, parents, and students.
Yes, I would hope that firing her would be something that could be reconsidered, but if that is even possible for the school to do ..I'm not sure of that at all.

Re: this is messed up!!
Unfortunately, this is the way it is today. I also had my share of swats in school, and it didn't kill me neither. Now with the freaking ACLU and liberal touchy feely people running everything, this is what happens. The kids in school know you can't do anything to them, and goes for at home too...or they cry child abuse. It's not the same world anymore. If kids can't be disciplined at school or at home, is it really any wonder they're shooting each other ??? Unless things change, and they won't, better hold on to your ass.
Disclaimer...this is not a political statement..only facts.

If I could possibly have my way....the mother would be suffering the consequences of her daughter's and her own actions.

O.k. I have to ask why was the child on the phone with the mother? Was there something going on that the child had to talk to the mother? Was something going on at the school?

i am SO SORRY i didn't add that part in when i wrote it earlier. (i was going for the short version) from what the papers said the student called her mother for no particular reason other than to say "hi."

Re: this is messed up!!
Here goes my blood pressure. The schools now a days suck. They have no respect for the kids, for the parents, for the teachers.
I feel the teacher was right in enforcing the policy. The mother should also be disciplined for telling her daughter to disrespect the teacher and disregarding the policy. The student should also be disciplined for violation of school policy, and disrespecting the teacher. OK now for the tougher stuff. Since we are all attempting to place ourselves in the teachers shoes, and since we all different levels of diplomacy, I feel the teacher should have given the student the verbal directive to end the call and turn the phone over to the teacher until the end of class. But that wasn't going to happen, since mother opened her big fat mouth, then the teacher should have called the office and asked for a escort and had the student removed from the class. The student probably would have put up a struggle, now we have crossed into the criminal world, can we say disorderly conduct, in which the police would have been called, but they where probably there already, ya know those community service officers. Then not only the student, but mummy dearest would have to explain to the judge, why. But now for the really bad part. The school has just set a very bad precedent. They just announced to whole student body, that it's OK for you to talk on the phone during class, and if the teacher tries to do any thing about it, the teacher will be fired. Way to go, school board members, we always know that we can count on you to do right by the kids....

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! now i know i am not alone in the world with my way of thinking. it's stupid crap like this that is going to cause lil red to be home schooled. because i WILL spank her if she acts up. maybe i'm just a little old fashioned but i remember the good ol days (that being the 80's and 90's lol ) when the parent's actually SIDED with the teachers and the law. that if you got in trouble at school there was no "my daughter is innocent!" (said by parent's) instead they said "what did you do? and WHY did you do it??" and they surely didn't tell you to disobey your teacher, and they did care if you got "mouthy" with your teacher in their presence. but times have changed..... parent's are too scared anymore to actually discipline their children. (but that is a rant for another post lol )

Re: this is messed up!!
leeuh, I think we all have agreed that the student and mother were very wrong, but the teacher should also teach by example, and not just by text and lectures.
The teacher had an opportunity to show the students that conformity to rules are necessary, and actions have consequences.
But the teacher should have, for her own sake, and for the sake of teaching by example, risen above the bad behaviour of the student and mother instead of losing her cool.
I'm am certaintly not against the teacher, but the facts remain that all three parties involved, broke rules, and it's very sad that it is the teacher that will suffer the most.

Re: this is messed up!!
See? There ain't no way I could EVER be a teacher.... especially in high school. I'd be smackin' the shit out of that girl!
She has no respect for authority, plain and simple! They hand out "student handbooks" the first few days of school.... "codes and conduct." Maybe she needs to read it again!

Re: this is messed up!!
I got a few whoopins in school, & I turned out OK, except for being socially unacceptable, & people shut out the lights & close curtains pretending they're not home when I knock on their door....lol When the abuse law was passed, I'm sure there was a few that were abused, but all it took was a smart lawyer to figure out he could make a case out of it, but now it's so out of contol that you can't force a kid to do anything without the chance of going to court
