Oktoberfest
October 12, 1810, four years after Bavaria had become a kingdom, crown prince Ludwig of Bavaria (who was to be King Ludwig I) married princess Therese of Saxon-Hildburghausen. The official festivities lasted five days and included parades of riflemen, music, eating and drinking. The festivities ended with a horse race held on a green which was situated in those days outside of the city limits and named "Theresienwiese" (Theresa's green) in honor of the bride. Over the next years the horse race was repeated and the Oktoberfest, also called "Wiesn" was born.
Anybody have anything planned? They're celebrating all over here in Texas. They're having Oktoberfest in Addison this weekend. Too far for me to drive but they're celebrating here in my town, too! I knew we'd come around
Beer, bratwurst and the chicken dance!! What combination could be better??!!

Well, we here in the Midwest practically INVENTED Octoberfest. Of course, we all know (now) who absolutely invented it.

Re: Oktoberfest
In my neck of the woods, we don't go overboard for Octoberfest. We're more in the mood on my b-day in March.(the 17th) I think it's more of a rebelious thing having something to do with cabin fever, since it puts spring right around the corner. Either that or spring break. I can't decide which...

Re: Oktoberfest
It's a big deal here, all the wineries (and there's tons of them) celebrate it big time, beer, wine, cajun, bluegrass and German bands.
Some towns around here that get the majority of their revenue for tourism really blow it out for Ocktoberfest.

Re: Oktoberfest
As I do not drink, Oktoberfest celebrations tend to run to the mundane in my group. We might walk in the woods and comment on the leaves.

Well, seeing that I'm half German and all, I think it's my duty to uphold the traditions of my ancestors
