Any home remodelers here?
I sure could use some advice....I'm ripping up an old 70's orange shag from the living room, there are hardwoods underneath...but here's the thing...first the carpet, no problem, lifts right up, then the padding, no problem but the padding is stapled to a particle/plywood type of underlayment, that underlayment is nailed down, and with lots of nails, I don't mind pulling all the nails cuz the hardwood is in good condition underneath, it's just getting the underlayment removed...so..since the underlayment is particle board, would wetting it down good with water help break it up and be easier to remove around the nails and leaving them to pull up later? Otherwise, it looks like just crowbaring, scraping it out in little hard bits, and this could cause further damage to the hard wood...

Re: Any home remodelers here?
I have done this before, and I believe the crowbar is your best answer!....Not sure if wetting it works, but it sounds like it would take more time to do all that then to just stick the bar under it and pull it up....You can also use the claw of the hammer!

Re: Any home remodelers here?
too many nails, can't pull the nails first, and that means the underlayment can only be be "chipped" away in tiny bits and pieces.....bummer! I guess for now, it's all hard, slow tedious work doing little bitty sections at a time...what a wicked mistress an old house can be, eh?

Re: Any home remodelers here?
Please, whatever you do...DO NOT wet that particle board!!! You're just asking for even more trouble and a very large mess (and not the fun "mess" either ) Done some of this before, just have to do it the hard way. You will have to refinish the hardwood anyways so...just don't put any deep scratches or marks in it as best you can.

Re: Any home remodelers here?
Chaz, just is right. Particle board and water do not mix! The nails may be rusty, depending on how old your house is. Try a little oil or good ol' WD40 on them. It may be labor intensive but it just might work.

I'm better suited for givin' info on kitchen remodels, sorry

Re: Any home remodelers here?
You can pull the nails first, but it will take lots of time. You would use a wrecking bar, this tool only gets around the nail, you would pound it, using a hammer, down under the nail head, then pry the nail out. These tools cost about $6 and up. Then all you would have do is pick up the underlayment and carry it out. Do Not Use Water!

OMG, my parents had the same stuff in their house. Do you still have the rake. I remember after vacuuming, ya had to rake the carpet.

Re: Any home remodelers here?
Chazzy, not sure if this makes any sense, but when prying the nails up with a crow bar, place a small piece of wood between the crow bar and flooring to give it some leverage, reinforcement and protection, so you don't mar the wood underneath, and easier for the nails to come out as well, this might help.

Re: Any home remodelers here?
I do agree
Water is not the answer.

Not sure what you plan on using to remove the nails, but a "Wonderbar" is absolutely fantastic. It is basically a reshapped and made "crowbar". They are very good for what you described, Use a hammer to get it under the nails. Also, you can use "Vicegrip" pliers to remove the nails once part of them is exposed.

Now, get you mind out of the gutter about the wonderbar!!

Yes Just you are right about using a wonderbar, not a crow bar, that is what I had in mind when I wrote my post, not a crowbar, and no water pls.

Re: Any home remodelers here?
Just priced wonder bars at lowes, about 14 bucks and up, gonna pick one up this weekend....anything to make the job easier, and I'm gratefull that nails and underlayment are all I'm dealing with in this room, the kitchen carpet was glued down to the hardwood, and I'm still looking at that glue residue!

Re: Any home remodelers here?
I've asked a floor refinsher, and he said to use some sort of adhesive remover and be prepared for a butt load of scraping and cleaning...haven't even attempted to try it yet!

Maybe you could try sheeroff or something similiar, it's for removing wallpaper glue so maybe it will work. I'd ask first to be sure that it wouldn't harm the wood flooring. Just a thought..

Re: Any home remodelers here?
This is one of those times that I wished the site allowed for other types of pictures in a profile. I would pay to see a pic of that groovy '70s shag carpet. Minus any stains of course.

Some of the old rusty nails are braking off, but using a nail set, or nail dtiver for those, but things are coming along good, but slow!

I would love to know how this project is coming along. I know a little about home remodelling, but can't get too specific in the forum.
