i never heardth episiotomy. i made the mistake of having margaret in a teaching hospital and having a 56 hour labor. plus she was 7 weeks premature.

actually, a clean straght incision is going to heal up with less scaring than a tear. less scarring is a good thing in delicate tissue.
back in the days of strictly homebirth, a large percentage (i used to know what percentage)of the mom's ended up with what was called "female problems", from tearing during chilbirth. it was dealt with by ignoring it. it would make intercorse painful for many of them. not to mention the ones who died of infected rips and tears.
any incised wound is going to do better than a rip. speaking as a 15 year vetran of a peds office. the edges are going to go back closer to how they were before the wound, causing much less scarring and dramaticly reducing the chance of infection. i couldn't even venture a guess as to how many minor surguries i have assisted with.
of course it is best if there is no tear or episioytomy. but given my choice, it's the episotomy every time. just because it's "natural" doen't make it good.poison ivy, hemlock and arsenic are natural, but i try to stay away from
