Mac vs. PC
What do you use now? Do you currently have one but are considering switching to the other when your ready to purchase a new computer?
Have you or are you curious about some of the other operating systems popping up that claim to be better than Windows?
Are you a set-in-your-ways kinda person, and what your using now has always been good 'nuff, by gawd? Are you not-so-happy with what you have been using, but have gotten comfortable with it so switching and using something different new is just kinda scarey or a hassle?

Re: Mac vs. PC
Mac are cool baby! Just too damn expensive. Their nitch is or was more graphics / photo and video production. Now adays I'm not sure there is much advantage other then they tend to be more user friendly. The latest ver. uses an Intel processor so you can run any Windows programs or Mac on the same puter.

Yep...I was wondering if anyone is now using that mac-running-windows thing and how it's working out for them.
I had to do toe to toe combat for three weeks with a remote access hacker when I first got XP...(I won that war, by the way!) and it was annoying also at first to download 40 or more security updates and patches every time I turned on my computer, now I have to say I really love using XP...but then again, I've had very little exposure to any other OS....and I'm very afraid of trying the "vista"...afraid of the same problems I had with XP at first.

Oh yeah...by the way...this thread title should be mac vs windows...my computer should have a device on it, where I have to blow into it and register a certain level of caffiene before the keyboard unlocks and I'm allowed to type on it.

Re: Mac vs. PC
I used a Mac when they first came out years and years ago. But then they didn't have a lot of software. Since then all OS have been Windows. Never had a hacker try anythng, that I know of. I'm still learning XP stuff, and things like Word. I'm pretty good at the spreadsheet stuff, had to make my own spreadsheets for the business. Would really like to get into Excel, but now I really don't have much a reason for it. Now I'm looking for a laptop, mainly for when I travel with genealogy stuff. It's nice to have everything at your finger tips. Other wise I would have to travel with 3 expandable files and about 4 large 3 ring binders. That's not with any pictures that I have on disc's, and that number about 400, with serveral hundred more to come.

Re: Mac vs. PC
Things like photo's and video and even things like getting onto wireless access points are Mac's strong points. I dought there is as much hacking on the Mac platform either just because it's such a small fraction of users. I've always liked Macs even though they were a bit over priced when it came to programs like PhotoShop Mac had the upper hand. They do have a better display then PC for pictures. PC tend to be a bit darker and contrasty when compaired to Macs and Mac had the ability to calibrate the monitor for color and Gama as part of the operating system. And all programs would display images using the system wide calibration. It wasn't something you could do at all in windows pc till recent. But as the world changed now almost all computers used in the digital mini labs are windows based but funny most are still Windows 2000 and not XP even though XP has way better memory management in my opinion. Damn 2000 units just crash when they run out of available memory. In the photo business we open and close hundreds of large picute files every hour so memory management is a big issue. That was an issue with early Mac OS 9.x too. You had to atcually allocate a block of memory to each program. Say you had 300 MB of ram you had to tell Photoshop it could use say 250MB and leave the other 50MB of the OS. Then any time PhotoShop needed more then the 250MB you had to have a hard drive set aside as a scratch disk. It was fine if you only used the computer for one program but memory was an issue if you stopped one program and switched to another with out rebooting.

Re: Mac vs. PC
In a nut shell yes I'd rather have a new mac that can run both OS's. Macs are just cool! They seem to have a spirit or soul that isn't available in a PC!

Have a Dell flat screen PC and using windows XP. Works well for us, and this is about as good as it's going to get. Had a Mac, but when I couldn't get a mouse for it, took it out in that backyard and introduced it to Mr. Smith and Wesson...

Re: Mac vs. PC
What's the deal with Vista, did Longhorn get ditched alltogether, or did it evolve into Vista?
Any one know what the story is with that?

Re: Mac vs. PC
There is alot of differnce between the two.But believe it or not they are both good relible computer systems. The pc is more standardized.Meaning it will work with more of the modern applications. All in all,if your use to a mac stay with it.If you change, you may have to learn computing all over again

I assume there are far more Windows people than Mac people?
