It's mean
In watching the Dicovery Channel today, they had on about raising chickens for breeding. It was very interesting how they turn the eggs to simulate how the hen would.
However, after the chicks were hatched, they were put on a conveyor belt to seperate them from their shells. The chicks falling thru to another conveyor. This was not enough as the chicks were then seperated by sex and thrown into bins by sex that went to yet another conveyor. This one dumped them into a box.
Gees, you could see the chicks thinking "wtf" is happening

Re: It's mean
I saw that show too and felt the same way...I used to be a chicken farmer but my chickens were very happy free range chickens.
I raised them for eggs and did not have the heart to butcher any of them. I loved the spring time hatchings, all the fluffly peeping chicks following thier mother hen around.
Older hens who have stopped laying are usuall butchered and replaced with young layers, but I found that the older hens were the best at brooding and hatching the chicks.
Yep, it was a very happy chicken farm with very happy chickens.
