Interesting debate
Now, I don't want this to become a "religious" debate. I'd like for it NOT to get deleted from the get go.... That being said....
I saw on the news last night about a group of people, can't remember what they called themselves, but they're organ donors. They get on this list to receive organs, if anything should happen to them, and specify that, when they die, other members are to receive their organs.....
One guy said that, quote, "Giving an organ to someone who is not an organ donor themselves is like giving the powerball jackpot to someone that didn't buy a ticket."
What do y'all think? I, myself, am an organ donor. I believe that some people just don't want to specify on their driver's license or in writing that they are..... Case in point, my mother in law believes that if you do have it on your license and have a horrible accident, the doctors let you die just because they're so desparate for organs! My father in law once told her that she watches too much tv
What do y'all think about this whole thing?

I agree! btw, my mother in law is a donor.... it'll be our responsibility to let them know, heaven forbid, when the time comes...... That's another choice people have.

Re: Interesting debate
I believe we were given one set of organs and when they give up that's it. I feel it's wrong to give or receive you're organs. I don't want a transplant or anybody to have mine.

Re: Interesting debate
We could add some more worms to Moon's open can of them...like stem cell research and cloning.
When does science cross the line and start stepping on nature/God's toes?
Is it part of our natural evolution and/or God's plans to progress to the point of being scientifically and medically be able to decide and have a hand in who lives and who dies?

I'm not a very publically religious person; I have my faith, and it's between me and my higher power. However, I believe if God has a plan, then that plan includes us using our brains--if that means developing means of extending life, then so be it.

Re: Interesting debate
I agree with what you're sayin', columbus... If everything was created by that "higher power," then it was put on this earth for a reason. Certain plants that heal, etc. It's up to us to use our knowledge and discover what's out there that can help humankind.

Re: Interesting debate
Oh don't feel bad, capt....this site is just plum full of men who abuse their organs, I'd bet there are some abusing their organs right now as we speak!
Anyway...I do understand the group Moon mentioned in her original post...there are some concerns with a shortage of donated organs, long waiting list for them, and the possiblity of some corruption (if that is the right word)as to who decides, and how it is decided who will get that next donated and much needed organ.

"Don't have one...Can't even play one..." lol
As far as my internal one's...When I'm done with them they can have them...The only thing I have a problem with is the one's that get stolen. You know what I'm talking about, you wake up the next morning in a tub full of ice and a nice little scar... Talk about rude awakenings...

I wouldn't pressure anyone into donating their organs - but I do have the bumper sticker

the world is over populated as is.. I'm taking mine with me and I'd appreciate the offer but when one (or some) of mine give out I'll leave a little more air for the rest of you to breath.

Re: Interesting debate
hummm interesting topic...I had it put on my license just to make sure my wishes were heard...as for my hubby...any further problems with his heart and it will be a transplant situation...but I know that no doctor in their right mind will take a perfectly good heart and put it inside his chest...to many other things wrong that can't be fixed...

BCB, Lord knows, if there's anyone here that thinks the same way you do about overpopulation, it's me. But think about it this way. A man around your age has a life threatening accident. He desparately needs an organ transplant. He has 3 small children whom he loves more than life itself and who love him that much in return. If your organ were to be the perfect match , would you want to do this for him so that he could live out his life and be there for his children?
Just something to think about

I believe we live in a chaotic universe....what scientist gave us a quote something about "God rolls the dice"?
Einstein maybe....but even with a higher omnipotent power, it's all still like a roll of the dice....

Re: Interesting debate
I am a donor also, it's on my driver's license. I guess that if the time comes and I need one, I would want to return the favor. Even if I didn't need one, I still have no problem giving up mine, as I would no longer have use for them.

i've actually thought about it a lot over time and nope but i'd be more than willing to look after his kids when he's gone.

Re: Interesting debate
Speaking for myself, I have it listed on my drivers license to donate anything worth using, if there is anything. What the hell, if it will help someone, why not. I won't need them anymore.

Re: Interesting debate
as far as Chazzy's question it has always intrigued (sp) me that people have a big issue of when to pull the plug, feeling that they are "playing God". God did not put the plug on them - had they been allowed to die naturally they would not be in the predicament. And that is NOT to say that I would not want life saving measures, it just interests me how people look at things.

Re: Interesting debate
If something were ever to happen to me and I would never be myself again, let me go. I don't want to live like Terri (schiavo) did. If there's no hope, physically, then I have already gone home and yes, I would donate my organs. I will get a new body and won't need the old one.
