Copyrights, downloading and P2P
How do you feel about it?
Do you feel it's wrong, pure pirating, but do it anyway cuz your a cheap ass?
Do you pay and get your downloads the legitimate way cuz it's the right thing to do, or because you're afraid of being caught?
Has anyone themselves suffered the consequences of downloading music from a P2P or know of someone that has?

Re: Copyrights, downloading and P2P
Hhhmmm....never thought I'd see this topic on the WN forums....but why not? And it happens to be an issue that's part of a class I teach. My students (college) say it's like speeding...."yeah, it's against the law, but everyone's doing it, and no ones getting hurt!" There are musicians that are hurt by it though, and being a musician myself, I think the illegal downloading it wrong. But the real "victims" are the record companies....and they've been screwing musicians for years! The real issue is whether the record industry will adapt to the "brave new world" of the internet or not, or just complain about "the good old days". I could go on...just like a college professor does...but I'll stop now....lol

Re: Copyrights, downloading and P2P
Obviously I'm not up on the latest gizmo's. What the heck is P2P????? I probably know by another name, maybe.. So By now you have gathered that I don't download music. I buy my CD's from the local store and then download them onto the computer. Then we will burn a disc with a variety of songs we like.

Re: Copyrights, downloading and P2P
Oh, boy...Here I go...
Well, The real victims are definetly the record company's, and They deserve it! They have been sitting in the wings exploiting true talent, and pedalling utter crap with a pretty wrapper for years! ( I am a musician also ) A working band will make, or SHOULD make a living touring, If they truly live to play live music. Even as a musician, I think we could do with out the rock star income, it just does nothing but begin a process of separation between their fans... and reality. Then, the records stop selling, and you have what? A pitiful, underdeveloped, spoiled child. If they were wise with there money, when the records were selling, At least a RICH spoiled, maladjusted child. In the case of myself, I play...because I enjoy it.I started playing to get out of working for a living, and get laid , honestly...same as every one else! It was cool. I now play, with my band, for our amusement. We play gigs, and record...for OURSELVES! If we wanted, we could start distibuting our own material, with varied results, but...F-it. If you can still make money as a professional musician, just not get EXTREMLY rich making ONE good selling album ( I said "good selling"!), play 10 dates and and pack it in, then you would be making a living, doing something you like, as I do now Tattooing. That should be decent right? Problem is with the balance. The record company, like a pimp...has no talent of its own, barring the talent for exploitation, and for manipulation.

Re: Copyrights, downloading and P2P
O.K., where was I...oh Yes! Anyway...The record company.
The record company (Big Record company, anyway: Corporation.) Has been deserving this for years! Much like the rest of the Corporate world has been. These institutions were NEVER supposed to be in existence still, the were supposed to be dismantled, but...Grew, much like the Chicken Heart...to engulf everything! I DO support the bands I like, I buy their albums, give them my money...I choose to, However, they are mostly on unknown labels, and are, by and large, unknown themselves, exept for by there small, but loyal followers. LOYAL...not trendy and fickle!
I would GLADLY...with The same joy I derive from beating the Government at its own game ( happens ONCE in a while!) download a Nicole Simpson album...were it not crap.
So I won't....

Call me stupid, ignorant, non-techie, what ever. Do I read this right by saying, like you and I would buy albums, or get downloads, but not the same ones. And then share with each other, so we can have twice the music. Is that the general gist of this????? Or like am I in the wrong back 40 acres here?

Re: Copyrights, downloading and P2P
It's not the music, I think, that makes the goverment prohibit those P2P programs, the software companies are the ones that suffer the most from this. I'd say without hesitation that half or more then half of the people are using illiegal Windows at least, not to talk about all the others small programs that we use every day! I've myself have been warned by my provider and by RIAA about uploading and downloading illiagly, on the other hand they can basically do nothing about unless they come and rip your hard drive of your computer. The only way your getting caught for sharing "anything" is when the supervisiors within your ISP log into the same sharing program and go thorough your files, however, by doing that they violate the law, if I'm not mistaken signed by Bill Clinton in 1995 While on the subject, sometimes I feel I'm paying too much money for internet just to check my mail once in while and post messages

I'm happy to use iTunes for my music, but I still "fly the magic airplane to England" to watch my Doctor Who.

Re: Copyrights, downloading and P2P
I've been known to justify my freeloading downloading by remembering all the times I felt so ripped off by buying a full length CD for $16, only to find one, maybe two songs on it worth paying for at all.

Re: Copyrights, downloading and P2P
...and it's only like...a real tiny tiny percent of that $16 dollars that actually goes to the artists and musicians? I heard that somewhere, but then...I hear allot of things.
