Voips
I've seen more an more of these popping up, I'm just now getting around to checking them out, right now I'm using skype, it's pretty good, most calls to phone lines have been clear.
Anyone else have any bad or good experience with VOIP* to
share?
*VOIP-voice over internet provider...making (free) phone calls through your computer.
Correct me if I have the definition wrong.

I was wondering myself....I was looking into that vonage, which Im not sure is the same thing your talking about, but it has to be very similar......Vonage says you can call all over the US, Puerto Rico, Canada and Europe all for the one price.....Which is hell of a lot less expensive than the regular phone company.......

Vonage I believe is phone company that uses the internet connection for the phone line. NOt the same as the voice command thingy.

You could be right....I just thought it used the same kid of idea by going through your Internet connection

I also have skype and find it works very well. i call friends and relatives in ny and florida and have no problem. whats ur # chazzy--love to check your connection 4 u .

Anyone who calls my house...talks to an answering machine  I'm usually nowhere near my telephone
I tried Voipt once, but could only call others who had signed up for it, with Skype, I can call anyone's regular phone line, but their home page says this is just till the end of the year, and I plan on making use of that till the offer expires.

I just recently ordered this thing from AOL..... it's free from them but $2.50 a month on my phone bill, which isn't too bad. I can receive calls on line... with the options: disconnect and take call, take a message (and play it back on line), ignore call, or send it to a different number (you can put in up to 4 numbers). It's pretty cool and worth the money if you have AOL

I had that option when I had my dial up service. Now I just use a cell phone, no land line, but still have DSL.

I use VoipDiscount, I can forward the call to my phone and its freeee, all in-country calls are free! Love it

I've been checking out VoipDiscount, and the "webcalldirect" link on their site, I've emailed and shared with a few others and we're all pretty impressed with it. Skype is great, but their free calls do have a "end of the year" limit.

I have DSL, but my parents are on dial-up...I would like to set them up with a voip, but I'm not sure if it's worth it to them, and what kind of quality you can get using services like skype, webcalldirect and such with a dial-up connection.

i have a friend of mine in australia who uses that. and she loves it! she calls me daily on my computer. i don't know about the cost of it, but i do know that it is very clear, and easy to hear the other person. (when you muddle through her accent that is lol )

Skype is suppose to be free...till the end of the year, webcalldirect has an excellent deal on a free trial, call anywhere in the world for free(for the most part) and it's a little different, with webcalldirect, you type in your number, then type in the number you want to call, then wait for your regular phone to ring, pick it up and wait to be connected to the phone you're calling, you use the computer to connect the call, but once it's connected, you use your regular phone..

As Chazzy rightly said, Skype are going to charge for calls next year. But I think that will only apply when calling a regular phone line, there internet to internet (One Skype account to another Skype account) will remain free for the foreseeable future. Both users will require a microphone and soundcard or a USB VOIP phone, plus a webcam if video is required.
Sound and picture quality are very good, but this will depend somewhat on the speed of your broadband connection. You can use Skype with a dial-up modem, but you may experience voice interference.

Anyone have any free online phone call sites to share with me, I'm currently using one that is totally free, no download required and you can call anyone, (they don't have to have an account too) But it's been finicky lately and often, the calls won't go through.
It's the kind of voip where you just sign in, place the call through your computer and then talk on your regular phone, don't need to talk through a mic on your computer.
If anyoone is using a good site like this, message me, I'll share my finicky site with you and any others I find...(I'm searching now)
I love these sites for being able to call my parents frequently and talking as long as possible, since gas prices don't allow me to drive to visit as often.
(Maybe I wouldn't post the name of the site here? Sometimes these gems get too much advertising by word of mouth, get overloaded by too many users)

I had vonage for 4 yrs it was great never had a problem the hole time, to me it is the BEST voice over IP around NO I do not work for Vonage lol. When I moved I got a deal with Comcast you know the so now I use their VOIP and I do not like it, I have had a lot of problems with it. And it cost more then Vonage. When my contract is over I want to go back to Vonage why no problem and $25.00 a month (here) you just can not go wrong. Well that is my 2 cents worth.
