Could you tell me more about his military career? Well if you're hoping for a stoty about him coming back with 50 pounds of medals you'll be dissapointed. He was in a "Tank Buster " unit in Italy , Austria, Germany. His unit set up ambushes for Nazi Panzers & blew them to hell. They used basically sherman tanks modified with bigger guns but shorter barrels. They were no good for going toe to toe like Patton did, but if they could draw them in to a trap they worked good. My grandad on the other hand was in "Black Jack Pershings" unit, in WW1, & was decorated. After the war he got a personal letter from pershing telling him what a good soldier he was. I don't know if everyone in pershings unit got the same letter, but I know grandad did

When my brothers & I were little we wanted to hear all about it. He told us about his experiences, & showed us his photo albums, & then told us to NEVER, NEVER ask about them again, which we didn't. It was painful for him to think back to what he saw in those POW camps

Re: Father's Day
I don't blame him at all for not wanting to talk about it again. I have an uncle who won't talk about his 2 tours in Vietnam at all.
Decorated or not, I do like hearing these type of stories. You must be proud

I still get chills down my back when I hear the national anthem & see the flag. As far as dad I'm really proud. I've only seen my real dad once, I'm not sure how old I was, I wasn't in school yet. This one married my mom when I was 6 months old, which was unheard of then. He was strict but fair & took good care of me & older brothers

Re: Father's Day
Honor Thy Father and Mother....One commandment we can all follow whether we want to or not. I have never had a good relationship with my father and never will but, I do love him and wish the best for him...He may already be dead and I wouldn't know.....To those of you who know you're fathers...even if it hurts.....Love them! It will do wonders for your spirit.
Just a thaught!

Re: Father's Day
well i may not be a father yet but hopes to be one of these days.......i always been close to my dad especially the last few years i even been able to have a bond and since he told me stories about when he was in the US Army during the 60s while being in Korea.........thats why i took pride when i was in JROTC-US Army to give my respect back to my dad and other family members who served at one time or another cause when i would do color guard for football or basketball games it made me feel good to carry the flags that represent our country, state, and JROTC-Army flag for my highschool while playing the national anthem

Re: Father's Day
You're very welcome, Kinky
I've always had a love/hate relationship with my dad, so to speak. K1, I agree with what you're saying. "To err is human, to forgive is divine." As much pain as people go through, it's never good to hold onto that hate for another person. Of course, there are some instances where I could never forgive, but that's another story.
My dad was in the army in the early 60's. I was fortunate in that he had an accident while working on army vehicles that sent him home with an honorable discharge. Fortunate that I still have him and knew him growing up. If he would've served in Vietnam and not come home, I wouldn't be here!
NRG, I get all choked up too when I hear the Star Spangled Banner...... I have huge pride in this country and the men and woman who have and will continue to keep it safe for us
Anyhow...... I hope all the Fathers have a great day tomorrow! Sit back, relax, drink a cold one and reflect on all the great things you've done!

Re: Father's Day
I got two dad's in my life. They both have been good to myself and my son and hope for the best for both of us. Even though I talk to both, my dad and my step dad for different reasons, they're both great help with almost anything.
Hopefully I'll give them the 'right cards' this year for fathers day. The story behind it... you'll never know.

Re: Father's Day
I've often thought I was switched in the hospital at birth. I think I'm really a Gates, or Kennedy, or Rockefeller, someone like that. Some little bastard that should be living in the gutter is getting all my money. Any one out there, ( with loads of cash) think they got the wrong kid , back in May 19, 1959. Someone besides Traveler, I'm not convinced the spawn of Satan would have my best interest in mind. Just kidding folks. I have a great Dad, just had to throw that in...lol
