Funny thing about hand jobs is that it is the one thing that until recently I really didn't feel comfortable giving them. I had no issue with blow jobs. I enjoy giving those. I think you kind of got how some women do feel about hand-jobs. That is the problem I had. I never wanted a guy to feel like I will do something "instead of sex". No, not common....but as much as guys like to think they are masterful at it, some just aren't very good at it at all, and it's better to just skip it. It's awkward when a guy doesn't do it well.
