The front porch
Do you enjoy your neighbors? Do you live in an apartment and pass them in the hallway or lobby, or in a crowded community and your kitchen window is about a foot away from their kitchen window? A rural farm area where the only way to visit a neighbor on the next farm is by truck, tractor or mule cuz it's just to far to walk? A small town, like I do, where you can sit out on the big front porch and exchange greetings with everyone who's out walking the dog, retrieving their morning paper and mail?
Do you even know your neighbors or know them too well and currently have a feud or two going on?

Re: The front porch
I live in the suburbs, in a very quiet area where most people are above 60 yrs old. That goes for my neighbours too, but they are such a sweet old couple, they must be about 70-75 years old and I really enjoy looking at them when I come back from work and they're sitting at the porch drinking coffee and chatting till late, especially in the summer... sometimes their talking even puts me to sleep... well, on the other hand sometimes it's me who doesn't let them sleep, but they show so much understanding

Re: The front porch
Growing up, I walked a mile to my bus stop......Not a neighbor in site!......However, now a days, unfortunately this is the town where every one loves to live.....Just a perfect distance to the city, yet still country.........I own a house that the previous owner built, and in the 80's they sub-divided the property to build a house for her son.......Sooooo, sadly to say, I have neighbors, but they are the only ones around.....They are actually from Czechoslovakia .......So I have learned alot about their culture, not to mention they have an older daughter who is perfect for babysitting!...

Re: The front porch
I do enjoy chatting when I can with any of my neighbors.
My neighbors to one side are a retired couple, about 80 yrs old, and ever since I haved lived here, he's always chatted and been very friendly, but his wife was always cold and distant...till one day, while they were out, their beloved dog of 12 years got hit and killed in the road in front of our house, I stood in the middle of the road for about an hour till they came back home just to keep the remains of their pet from further traffic damage. Since that moment, she and I have been much closer....

Re: The front porch
If we have a bbq and have tons of food left over (which usually is the case), we take them some food. Neighbors can be really good friends and it's great when you can trust them enough to give them your house key when you go on vacation so they can take care of your pets! And if our pets like 'em, they have to be good folk

Re: The front porch
I live in a very small rural town Beaver City, yes thats right, go ahead & laugh it up,where everybody, knows everybody else, it's all good. I can say hello to them they all know me, I'm a carpenter now & they let me in their houses all day long while they're not there. Is that trust or what? You might call this place boring, but I don't have to deal with the crap that people in the cities do, like gang Bangers & robberies & ect.

Neighbors?? Yes, I have some. I have not talked to many.

I live in a trailer park and the thing I find strange is that most people never open the curtains..

Makes me wonder if the are hiding or hiding what is happenin' in there.

Re: The front porch
Most of my neighbors are "yard people", always outside with thier lawn mowers, leaf blowers, weed wackers...so there's plenty of opportunity to exchange a few words...although all the noise all weekend from their lawn machines can make it difficult to just spend a quiet moment in the gardens with my morning coffee...but hey, small price to pay for good neighbors that bring me cake on baking day!

Re: The front porch
The neighbors we see most frequently are of the four legged and wild variety. We do have human neighbors-------just not to close. We dont see their house- they dont see ours. Thats on one side...the other neighbor (the one we can see) are rarely there. And no neighbors across the road. Makes for very peaceful life!!

Born and raised in Point Place, a suburb if you will, of Toledo. every one knew each other because it is a recreational area, and the locals who live there year round have for years been very close.. no in-breeding , but close.. lol.. great place to live and raise kids... but at the same time, it can wear on you because everyone knows eveything...

Growing up we lived in a small town, so everyone knew who you belonged to, couldn't get into trouble, as everyone would call your parents. We knew when the 6pm whistle went off it was time to get home, so Mom and Dad never worried about us kids.
Now we live in another town not far from hometown, but don't really talk to the neighbors, they stay in their in there yard and I'll stay in mine.

Back then their no such thing as "sex offenders". You knew who was screwing around on their spouses, and with who. Never had to worry about keeping the doors locked. Everyone always was looking out for the other neighbors. If a suspicious car came down the road, the whole block was out in the front yard watching.

Re: The front porch
My wife and I moved in to this upscale neighborhood 1 year ago. As we either walk or bicycle around the area, we get waves from everyone and of course, we return the gesture. The neighbors (50 and older), like to stop and talk to us and I think they probably enjoy the fact that we know they're alive. There is a sense of community amongst everyone, being we are all newcomers. There are no young children, so the area is very, very quiet. An occasional grand child visits some of them, but on the whole, no kids for miles. Been there, done that. Now it's our turn!!!!!

Re: The front porch
I was a military brat packed into apartment complexes all over the world. Military families tended to average 4 to 5 kids so population density was great. Some of the cities I grew up in were several million people, but I live on 5 acres outside a midwest city in a restricted subdivision with minimum 3 acre parcels. I don't know my neighbors very well at all. Part of it is the extreme conservatism of my area (gotta carry guns, get bible courses in the schools, vote for tax cuts for the very rich). We have neighborhood summer parties and the women always gather at one table and talk about window treatments while the men gather at another and wonder what pitcher has the best ERA after the all-star break. After an hour or so, my wife always notes that they find me missing and home watching the deer and such in my wooded yard --- their silence is more "intellectually stimulating".

My comments sound a little gender specific. I apologize for the comments about the women. Actually, I would prefer to talk about window treatments rather than talk about pitcher ERAs in baseball.

I wish you well with your neighbors. People are quite wonderful, actually, but does any one "say something" nowadays instead of just talking?

I'm jealous, I would love to live near a small town, but out in the country, ya know where the deer and bufallo roam. Give me all the 4 legged creatures, but keep most of the 2 legged ones. If I want company, I can go into town. Now that's heaven on earth.

How about ya'all who haven't posted here yet, do ya love your neighbors, hate 'em, or do ya even know them?
