It is a Micro Soft Works text document. So with that you will need the works software that would include MS Word, or they say you can possibly open it with "Word pad" program. From what I can gather, you would need MS XP or a coverter to the udated word program.

Re: WTF is a .wps file????
Thanks! Word pad didn't work, but notepad did, kinda! I'd have to edit the crap out of the files I just recieved in order to pass them along to my mother.
I don't have Word on my computer yet, been waiting till after I reformat to install it, and I just can't seem to get the time and opportunity to do that! Arggghh!! Anybody able to convert the files for me from .wps to anything else for me...let me know...

Re: WTF is a .wps file????
Anyone know if that would work? If I emailed the .wps files to someone with Word, then they could open, maybe copy and paste it in Wordpad and send it back to me?
Heelllllppppp!!!!!

Re: WTF is a .wps file????
Simply re-naming it may go in the 'bad idea' column and may not give the result you want. When you open it in Notepad, you'll see all the raw data that the WPS format adds in there, like font info, text size, etc. Best bet is to find a wps to rtf converter (Google specific "wps rtf converter" . If you can open the file up on any other computer, then just do a "Save As" and pick a different file format, like rtf (Rich Text Format) which isn't such a pain in the ass format like the crappy wps.
Otherwise, you could just do what you had said and edit it out in Notepad then save it as .txt or .rtf format. Hope that helps, if it doesn't I'll try to take a crack at it if the other guys couldn't get it. It is a pretty simple thing to do if you know what you're doing.

Re: WTF is a .wps file????
Chazzy, I dont know if u got my e-mail though, I did convert the file and I managed to open it, let me know how it works out. While on the subject, microsoft word has its own converter build in so it does convert it with no problems.

Re: WTF is a .wps file????
Yes I did, doneff, thank you.
I still have a problem with it being readable for my mother, it's a geneoly history of part of my mother's family tree, and it would be better for her if I could get the document in the original format to send to her...here's the thing, I'm the go-between for my mother and a recently discovered "cousin" and both being women in their later years, they are having a problem corresponding by computer since niether one is very experienced. At least I can read the text!

Re: WTF is a .wps file????
Actually....NOPE!! My husband loaded in MS word into his computer for me, but when I went to open the file, I got an error message asking me to insert the proper CD to install a converter for that file. I don't even know where the husband keeps his software CD's, I'll have to nag him into install it himself.
