Did you know?
When you were growing up, usually a lot of people have an idea what they want to do with their lives, what kind of careers, kind of lifestyles they wanted to live the rest of their lives.
Did you know right away? How did you figure out what it is you wanted to do, to major in, and work on for the rest of your life?
What worked for you, that might help out to those to figure out what it is we might want to do down the road? Were you sidetracked at all, if so, how did you manage it?

Re: Did you know?
I started working in the criminal justice/law enforcement field when I was 15. At the ripe old age 23, being stupid and having a big mouth, I had to leave that area, way to much politics. Now, being much older, not so much wiser, I'm back in the criminal justice field, and plan on staying until I'm tired and retired.

Re: Did you know?
I always wanted to be an artist, but after listening to my dad spout off about there being no money in it, I got sidetracked into a career in labor. Only now am I living my dream. I'm enrolled in Northern Essex and am working on getting an Associates Degree in Multimedia. With a little luck, I'll be making movies like; Finding Nemo, and Toy Story, for Pixar Studios...

Re: Did you know?
I had a lot of great plans for my future when I was growing up. Unfortunately there wasn't money for college and advance studies. I gave in and wen to nursing school It wasn't what I wanted to do but I had no idea what it was that I wanted either. I have always been creative and always prefered to be outdoors. 3 years ago I met some elderly ladies who were admiring my flower beds and upset because they couldn't take care of their own flowers any more due to health issues. From there I put an ad in the newspaper and started designed anf maintaining flower beds. I have never given it a thought before because I never imagined that I'd be able to make enough money to support myself this way.
It's not easy to decide what you want to do for the rest of your life. I'm glad I got the nursing degree because it gave me something to do while I decided what I really wanted.

Re: Did you know?
ah growing up is not as easy as we think...I too was in same situation as wild...no money for college when I graduated...but rebel that I was I went to work for local hospital lab and with the guidance and advice of the director I completed studies and obtained my license...worked in medical field for 17yrs..including supervisor of lab at local correctional institution..then came pitter patter of little feet so I retired to raise my kids...with some part time work in radio as programmer, commericial writer/producer and bookkeeper at station where my ex was general manager..once it was no longer cool for kids to be seen with Mom I went back to work as a manager for telemarketing firm and then as manager for credit card company customer service/collections...so you see life's road isn't always as straight as we might like or expected...but I wouldn't have missed those experiences for anything..and now I'm working on finishing my dream...almost finished with my Bachelors in Psychology then hopefully on to Masters in order to teach at college level...don't give up on your dreams...just buckle your seatbelt and enjoy life's ride!!

Re: Did you know?
To be honest, I did go to college, however, I also ended u p paying all those student loans as well!
Although I had no clue what I wanted to do until I went to college, I did decide to major in Psy, and elementary education, as well as early childhood.....When I graduated, I worked in the schools and hated it!...The politics suck!.....So I decided to work for United cerebral palsy as a teacher....
Got married, had kids and unfortunately have the hardest job in the world!
I can say that the older I got the more I truly thought of things I would love to do now!.....I am looking into real estate.......Im just not sure, unless we have a true dream or a given talent, I can't imagine people knowing what they want to do with the rest of their lives when they are still so young....

Re: Did you know?
There's nothing else in the world I've ever wanted to be than the obvious. I've been around animals all my life. Can't remember a time when we didn't have a dog or a horse. And like nyk, I got sidetracked along the way but it's never too late! So don't give up!

Re: Did you know?
Wow, life is interesting. Was going to go off to a fashion design school that I was accepted to - but fell in love. Went to College for Elem. Ed. for 1 year - so glad that did not work out - I would have been bald by now. Became a secretary for many years. Now back in school for nursing - I can't wait to graduate and practice!!
BC - You are great, just do a lot of soal searching and think about things that you really love in life.

Re: Did you know?
when I was a teenager , my first dream was to have somone who cared about me. next was to have food and clothes, so I quit school to get a job. did telephone line work. then autobody shop, opened my own shop at 24. a drunk teen driver screwed up my back, so had to close. opened up the store, in 84. My wife of 22 years cheated, left, then embezzled evrything I had worked for, by being my book keeper. now the dreams are over, reality has set in. I'm back to wanting the first 2 things I ever wanted.

Re: Did you know?
Thats cool that you all seem to have found what works for you. I've come to notice that the biggest thing I like is motorcycles. Just really haven't been able to be around them constantly because of working (well, who doesn't work these days).. and my son and trying to get things done at home after work and then its another day already. Other than that.
I like other things here and there as well, but have yet no real big thrust to get a move on it (which is what I really need) Or how to go about doing it being there is only so much offered in this town.

Skip that first dream, you already got that! Allot of people really care about you! Even with a half a continent between us, I feel very close to you, and it's because of your history, and the way it's made you work harder, and made you persevere where many would have made it a crutch to use, you've used it to become the person I, and others really do care about very much!

I'm right down the street. I care about you more than you realize. You have already over come more disappointments in your life than most of us will see over many lifetimes. It's time to have some new dreams and make new plans, and I will be here to help you with every part of it that I can.

Re: Did you know?
HR - We love ya Baby!!
BC - did you notice how many of us are back changing our goals and now in school at a "later" age?? You will figure it out and you never know where life may take you - maybe you will not always be in that small town (I grew up in one that was 350 people) I drove an hour to college. I never expected to move all across the country and end up back in school at this age. I am more focused, I know who I am and what I want out of my life now. Take your time and there are plenty of online colleges you could take your core credits now and make firmer plans later?? Also, Is there any HD dealers around you? Could you get a job in sales or even a secretary for now so that you had some more knowledge about them?

I don't know but is there a possibility that you could get into a Tech school for motorcycle repair? I think that would good with your passion for bikes.

At one time I wanted to be a teacher. But had my first son at 17 and married at 18. Did get my G.E.D at 32 also went to tech school for nail technician. Now nails is a part time job. Not sure how much longer I can do that. Have carpal tunnel in both hands. Would like to go back and get my teaching certificate and work in the beauty schools, and or a degree in marketing for another job I would love to do.

Re: Did you know?
DRiving is about the only thing that actually held my interest. Watching NASCAR races helped. I went thru many things before acomplishing the truck ownership thing. It is finially paying off, and the company I lease to treats me very well.
Am I happy with it?? Well, of course I would rather be independently wealthy and not have to work. However, with me, all I would do is end up spending it on lawyers to keep me out of trouble. I do get bored easily.
