Re: America's Wolves in the Crosshairs
with all the resources available to our government, why arent the wolves that ARE a danger to man in any way, just rounded up and relocated to the extreme wild, like they have done with cougars and mountain lions? i have never had the privilege of seeing these magnificent animals in the wild, but just destroying them?

Re: America's Wolves in the Crosshairs
Ya know what? I've lived in the very rural hills, valleys and prairies of Missouri.
I lived where I know I share the land with and have often seen fox, coyotes, bobcats and panthers, although I've never seen a bear yet, I've seen their fresh paw tracks on the sandy creek and river shores....the thing is, what I'm saying is....that I'm an intelligent thinking being, and I know I share my world with these creatures, and if any of them are a danger to me, it will be my own fault, for not being careful, for not making an effort to understand and know about their behaviour, habits and such...which would mean, ...I'm a bigger danger to myself for being careless, uninformed and stupid than these native animals are to me.

Well said Chazzy... For every animal that pushed to extinction, is one more part of man kind that is lost forever. We are the ones that have pushed these animals to eat our crops, attack our pets, and endanger our well being. So if we need to place blame on any one thing, we only need to look at the human race.

How about mosquitoes? Can I kill them? Please? I really want to. I hate them; therefore, they die.

Or... you could make sure that no standing water around you is a breeding ground, put up a few bat and purple martin houses, ...

I don't keep up on stuff like that, but moon, that really sucks. I think they should keep them going no matter where they're located and such. No need to make them 'extinct' in one location or it's gonna be like that everywhere.

Re: America's Wolves in the Crosshairs
I believe we should have a hunting season on ALL politicians, lawyers, and judges.

I too, had a Hi-bred wolf once. We never did know what the father was, but Max's mother was 5/8 Timber Wolf and 3/8 Malamute. He was a smart dog and his mother was even smarter.

I am in complete agreement with has been said so far by the membership. The Wolf is in my totem, and I support the as much as I can any and all protection of All species of Wolves.

We have or use to have a bounty on coyotes here, there is even a hunting season on crow here. And I believe that we should learn to co-exist with wildlife. After all they were here first.

Having owned two wolves, & being the wildlife lover that i am, i would love to see them protected. Politicans are the ones that need a bounty, like $2.00 a ear, just like they did the coyotes years ago

Re: America's Wolves in the Crosshairs
Humans are too arogant....I know people that take it upon themselves to kill every cowbird they see...that's just sick and misguided arrogance, for anyone to think that their opinion of an animal should decide whether or not it should exist...

Re: America's Wolves in the Crosshairs
When you say "cowbird," I'm guessing you mean egrets? It's kind of the same with vultures. Some people find them repulsive and wish they didn't exist. Well, if they didn't exist we would experience a plague unlike anything this world has ever seen!

Ignorance is the downfall of humanity.... so sad

Re: America's Wolves in the Crosshairs
Cowbirds are often confused with purple martins here, they are black with a bronze iridescent head, while the purple martin have that blue/purple head...cowbirds will kick out another birds egg of the nest and lay one of it's own, then when that chick hatches, the cowbird chick will kick out the other birds chick so it gets all the food the surrogate mother bird brings back...
Yes, it is a rather sad part of nature, but hell, I'm not arrogant enough to decide that God or mother nature totally screw up and made a mistake with this birds existence....geez, animal populations control themselves and this is one way that it's done.

Re: America's Wolves in the Crosshairs
Ya know what's funny though? My husband used to get upset about the male hummigbirds fighting over the feeder all the time, and use to try to "shoo" away the dominant one...
I kept explaining to him, that if they didn't fight all the time, they wouldn't NEED a feeder full of sugar water, and that's just what hummingbirds are, and that's what they do and quit trying to butt in!!!

Back to wolves...PBS is re-running the 2 part series on the history of dogs...I'm enjoying it the second time around as much as I did years ago when it first ran!

Re: America's Wolves in the Crosshairs
That is a VERY good show and I suggest that anyone who can should watch it!!

I know I've probably said this before somewhere down the line... but I'll say it again.

I know it's very important to teach your kids respect... right from wrong, that there are horrible people in this world and really great people... how the world works, what to look out for, how making fun of others is downright mean... etc.. you get the point.

But what we, as a whole, forget to acknowledge along the way is the animal kingdom. Predators/prey... I was never taught about that when I was growing up. Therefore, I couldn't watch those PBS specials showing animals killing each other and eating them. I thought it was so sad and almost disliked that predator for what they had done!

As I grew older, I educated myself! Now, when I sit down to watch a show like that with my kids, I take the time to explain to them that that's the circle of life. Each animal on this earth serves a purpose.

It's pure population control/disease fighting at its finest. And by "pure," I mean in the "clean" sense, so to speak. It's natural! Plain and simple... and it is MEANT to be!

I'll step down now and quit talkin' y'all's ears off lol

Teach, pass the word along... even if it's not your own child.. even if it's another adult! If that's all you can do, it's worth something... it's worth so much to me!

Re: America's Wolves in the Crosshairs
The PBS show, is just great! It shows us that domesticated dogs that we love as pets, came about from their evolution due to our GARBAGE!!
Our earlies ancestors dumped garbage, wolvles learned that we are a source of easy food, we in fact encouraged wolves to evolve to animals that do not fear us and to live near us, and now some think that's a bad thing?
Reminds me of some news stories you hear every so often, someone buys some country property, moves in...then petitions for the eviction of the pig farmer off his land that's been in his family as a pig farm for a century!!!

Re: America's Wolves in the Crosshairs
Reminder and update!
--------------------------------------
Aerial gunners have killed over 600 wolves in Alaska since 2003, and now Governor Sarah Palin wants to offer $150 bounties to encourage hunters to kill more wolves.

Even worse, Idaho and Wyoming have proposed aerial gunning programs of their own, meaning that soon the wolves of Yellowstone could be gunned down from airplanes if they leave the safety of the park.

Under Alaska's cruel aerial gunning policy, marksmen can shoot wolves from the air or use airplanes to chase them in deep snow to the point of exhaustion then land and execute them at point blank range.

Please take action today.... before the snow begins to fall and wolves face another deadly winter. And then please share this message with all your friends who want to see aerial gunning banned.

Re: America's Wolves in the Crosshairs
Oh my god that is terrible, they have no right to destroy wolves who have lived in these areas for years and years. Maybe that Sarah Palin should be shoot from above or made to run until she can't run anymore.
As i've said before i have always loved wolves and i think they are beautiful creatures who have the right to live like any other animal.
I understand farmers ect get angry if their livestock gets killed by wolves, but it is the way nature works, there is a food chain. Unless an animal is dangerous to humans and will hunt to kill a person, they should be left alone.

Re: America's Wolves in the Crosshairs
What Moon and HBG said. It is a real tragedy that some of us humans feel that way. Why is it if something seems to get in our way, we just exterminate it. Yes there is a food chain, but the wolves don't kill for sake of killing, like humans. They will only kill when they are in need of food. Only humans kill, because we can.
