A big load of BULLSHIT!
You will not believe what's going on here in Texas. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm all for getting drunk drivers off the road but this is ridiculous!!
The police are going into BARS and arresting people for PUBLIC INTOXICATION!!!!
Who's to say that some of these people weren't gonna call a cab?!!
They even arrested people in a hotel bar that were staying at that hotel!!!!! Can you get arrested for drunk walking?? and how frickin' dangerous is that??!!!!
What in sam HELL is this world comin' to?!!!
Just my two cents... what do y'all think about this?

Re: A big load of BULLSHIT!
Sounds to me like someone changed the story around to make good print or good TV ratings. It wasn't that long ago that one in Texas could drive while the passenger had a drink in there hand. I find it hard to believe that the cops just picked a bar and went in to arrest drunks. Two things. 1) either there was nothing to do and the boys in blue just wanted to be assholes. 2) there had to be some complaint that lead the copers there in the first place. I'm more inclined to believe the later. I have family in Texas and have been told of their, the cops, failing to take any action, too much damn paper work. I'm in total support for getting drunks out from behind the wheel. However public intoxication is a tricky thing, it should be in forced when the party is either drawing attention to themselves, ie disorderly or when they are a danger to themselves. We have had several cases when a young college students, not picking on these guy's, just telling the facts, was drinking at a friends house/bar and then was suppose to go else where, but found the bottom of the river. To me it's a either/or situation, just imagine if some would report that a cop had stopped a person for being publicly intoxicated and let them go, only to find them later at the bottom of the river or else where dead. We all know the shit would really hit the fan then.

Actually, there were no complaints that I know of (of course, they tell the parts they want to on the news) but they interviewed some police officers and they said if you're drinking in a bar, it's a public place and you'll be arrested, plain and simple.
As far as our police not reacting fast enough... I called the police in this hick town when my neighbors house was being broken into and it took them over an hour to get here. We're not in the middle of nowhere. They called "county" out here...... Talk about "incompetant"

You can't smoke in your car in NY if you have children, AND you can't smoke in bars, restaurants, and now they are even trying to make it so you can't smoke in public streets....
And the car thing, even though you wouldn't do it with kids, but they are talking about passing a law here that you can't smoke in your car either!.......
Ohhh yeah. not to mention you have to have your lights on when its raining! (in your car).....

Re: A big load of BULLSHIT!
Moon, I heard that on the news the other day also and nearly wrecked my car!!! It is my understanding that Texas passed a law that allows patrons to be arrested in the bar. This is totally rediculous. The cops have no way of knowing at that point the intention of the patron and until they get behind the wheel it should not be a crime. If they want to crack down on drunk drivers - why not quit slapping repeat offenders on the hand and make them accountable. Do you know that there are more people killed each year by drunk drivers than died in the 9/11 attack? I have had some wonderful friends killed by drunk drivers and have known friends & relatives who have almost killed themselves by drunk driving. This subject hits too close to home! I do believe that you have a right to go to a bar and drink without being harrassed/arrested in the bar by cops - just be responsible - DO NOT DRIVE!
wow - now that ya'll know where I stand . . . .

Re: A big load of BULLSHIT!
They're taking their lead from Calif, all the bullshit starts here then other places try it. It started with the cops sitting in bars, undercover, watching people drink. When they were buzzing pretty good and left, the cops would pick them up in their cars for DWI...they get more money that way. As soon as the key hit the ignition it was all over..you are offically driving....

Just to add more fuel to this fire. Remember that, atleast in Minn., if you are on a riding lawn mower and mowing the grass, and drinking, you can get nailed for DUI/DWI.

OK this is pooper. Staute says, you may not operate any motorized vehicle while intoxicated. It does not go any further to define motorized vehicle, and it does not limit it to public roadways nor does it limit to what you are intaxicated on/with. So if the vehicle has a motor, no matter what, you are at risk.

Re: A big load of BULLSHIT!
In Missouri and Illinios, there are highway signs that remind motorist that if the weather requres windshield wipers, you must have your headlights on also. That's a saftey thing I won't argue against any measure, forced or voluntary, that is proven to decreases loss of life.
....and I have also seen new stories here about DUI/DWI charges against lawn tractor drivers
proving to be a threat to themselves or others, even a story of a DWI/DUI charged to someone on horseback.
Smoking in your car has been proven to be enough of a distraction to be the cause of death and injury accidents, (which is why auto insurer's give discounts to non-smokers)too but so has tuning in a radio, MacDonald's hamburgers, make-up applying and cell phone use.
But the "public intoxication" laws MH is talking about, is exactly what she calls it, a big load of bullshit.

In California if you are that height or under you must be in a car seat/booster seat. I know a few high schoolers that are required by law to ride in a booster seat......safety? Maybe. Humiliating....Yes.

Oh no! I wasn't saying that you were, NYK!! I'm just agreeing with everyone that there are laws that go too far, and some that don't go far enough!
Frankly, I'd rather see a drunk mowing his lawn, or a horse without headlights on a rainy day than to be be on a highway in a state that has no laws about motorist and cell phone use!

I too am all for getting drunk drivers off the road. However , at times the law can get alittle assinine. I have a friend who is confined to a wheelchair, and likes to go out and have a few drinks just like anyone else. One night we wasn't able to get a ride home. So he took off, rolling up the side of the road and was pulled over and given a D.U.I. His chair wasn't even motorized.
