It depends what point you measure from, bearing mind about a third of the length is internally rooted in the pelvis. I suppose this could be included to the external measurement when adding it to your CV on a web forum, to spark initial interest from others. (You're not actually fibbing). 
Measuring by any means is fun of course. Heck, even smart phones have a measuring app in them for size and level... 
My preferred method is measured by my wife's noise response, then I'll know if I'm using the right tool for the job or not...
