St Patrick's Day
Born around A.D. 390, and the main patron saint of Ireland, Patrick was not actually Irish. He is believed to have been born into a wealthy Christian family in Wales or Scotland.
Maybe he wasn't so saintly ... at first. St. Patrick had no interest in Christianity as a young boy, but at the age of 16, he was kidnapped. He was sent to Ireland by Irish raiders and was enslaved as a shepherd for many years.
The myth that St. Patrick banished all the snakes from Ireland is not true, because Ireland has always been snake-free. They simply never made it there in the first place.
Till the 1700s, St. Patrick?fs Day was only considered as a Roman Catholic feast and was celebrated only in Ireland where people would prayer in the church or at home. But the tradition of parades started in United States and not Ireland.
The first parade to honor St. Patrick took place in Boston in 1737. Whereas Ireland started their own parade tradition in Dublin in 1931.
On this day revelers fill their plates with corned beef and cabbage in the US, Canada and elsewhere. In Ireland itself, food is not an important part of the traditions.
Because the color green is associated with St. Patrick?fs Day, people are seen wearing green clothes, drinking green beer and they even dye the Chicago River green on this day. However, back in the 18th century the color associated with St Patrick was blue.
Now, I will go and have my green beer!
