Re: supplements
Be careful, not all supplements are good for you. DOCTORS DO NOT ALWAYS CHECK THINGS OUT! Do research online. Almost all supplements have things you can not eat or medication you can't take as a mix. Many also have side effects as well. They are also not regulated the way DRUGS are. So you can buy a multi vitamin that might have all the "daily recommend amounts" of things and buy another that is basically useless. There is a school of thought about "Whole uncooked" vs "pharmaceutical" as well but wont really get into that right now. I take certain supplements like Vit D3 and Vit E and a few others but there were a few my doctor recommended that I don't take. After I read up, I found out that they had some serious possible bad reactions if taken with some medication I take. Another said if you had a history of something else you might not want to take it. Also remember that some you need to take at certain times of the day or with or without food. And be very careful not o take to much. YOU CAN OVERDOSE ON SOME VITAMINS AND IT CAN BE DANGEROUS! And some things like psyllium have very specific things recommended when you take. For example don't take with other meds or supplements. You are supposed to wait 2 hours after you take any other before you take them. You also need to take one capsule at a time (if you take capsule form) and with at lease 8 ounces of water each. You are not supposed to lay down for I believe 1 hour after you take it.So again read, talk to a specialist if needed. READ THE LABELS AND INSERTS WELL.

I'd save your money. There is no evidence that they do any good at all.

Re: supplements
Actually some supplements can be helpful 5tar. if the person is a bad eater especially. It is always preferred that you get your vitamins/minerals from food but you would have to eat so much to get what is recommended. The problem is I have never heard of a multivitamin that was good and most people don't know what they should be taking. The other issues are what I explained previously.Even the medical community can't agree what we need and how much. It changes day to day. But if you use a bit of that oxymoron, common sense then you can find a happy medium that seems to help. It also should be based on your individual needs. For instance my blood work came back that my vitamin D was very low. So I take vitamin D now. I do know that during summer months I don't have the same issue so I can stop taking it then.BUT DO YOUR HOMEWORK. DON'T DEPEND ON OTHERS TO GIVE YOU THE INFORMATION. THAT INCLUDES YOUR DOCTORS.And definitely look up side effects and drug/vitamin/mineral/food interactions. For example, there are many things that you have to limit things like grapefruit or grapefruit juice.

Re: supplements
The make up of a cell from a grapefruit is missing a protein cell.
That void attracts the consumed drug and absorbs it at almost 98%....depositing it into your bloodstream at 95%...or close to it.
Most drugs are tested at an absorbtion rate...and i'm guessing here....at about 60% absorbtion rate. The rest is flushed out of your body.
The incomplete cell of a grapefruit is like a magnet trying to close it's incomplete gap...because nature hates a void.
Most strong medication says..."DO NOT TAKE WITH GRAPEFRUIT"

Good advice Newbs.

Re: supplements
Stop showing off how smart you are! Ha..ha..ha

All kidding aside people think just because something is over the counter and or given to you by a doctor it is safe. In reality you need to be your own advocate. Research, ask your pharmacist, use the internet, read the paperwork that comes with your medication and vitamins. Understand that "All natural" or "Organic" don't mean a damn thing. I was in the advertising field I know for a fact they are words to get people to buy but have no real meaning or laws that say you can only use them for certain things. They are trying to change some of this but as of right now it is not regulated. And health food stores can sell you anything because vitamins and alike are not regulated by the FDA the way people think.Make sure you read up on interactions with food and vitamins with your medication. There are many websites that you just type in the meds and so on and it will tell you what you should and shouldn't take together or at all.

I quite agree. If you have an iron deficiency, an iron supplement is a perfectly well defined and proven way of addressing this problem. My specific point was that there is no clinical evidence that this particular product is helpful for the condition stated. Yes, the company claim that taking lots of the raw ingredients that eventual become cartilage will increase the production of cartilage but bodily processes rarely operate on such simplistic principles.

There are two class action lawsuits outstanding about the claims made for the effectiveness of glucosamine/chondroitin.

If it's cheap it won't do you any harm, if it's expensive you're probably just wasting your money!

Re: supplements
I agree with you about the bullshit claims some of these companies make. Unfortunately because they are not regulated much to most peoples surprise, they get away with this all the time. It has been in the news more times than I can count. Many times people are paying more for fillers than what they think they are getting in that capsule they swallow. It can have the smallest amount of the product they are looking for and basically be useless. There is a similar issue with makeup and skin care products. You really have to do your homework or as you said 5tar you are throwing your money away. Even worse is you could be harming yourself.

Re: supplements
CHONDROITIN (CHONDROITIN SULFATE) SIDE EFFECTS & SAFETY
Chondroitin sulfate is LIKELY SAFE when taken by mouth appropriately. It has been used safely in research for up to 6 years. However, there is some concern about the safety of chondroitin sulfate because it comes from animal sources. Some people are worried that unsafe manufacturing practices might lead to contamination of chondroitin products with diseased animal tissues, including those that might transmit bovine spongiform encephalopathy (mad cow disease). So far, there are no reports of chondroitin causing disease in humans, and the risk is thought to be low. It can cause some mild stomach pain and nausea. Other side effects that have been reported are diarrhea, constipation, swollen eyelids, leg swelling, hair loss, and irregular heartbeat.

Some chondroitin products contain excess amounts of manganese. Ask your healthcare professional about reliable brands.

Chondroitin sulfate is POSSIBLY SAFE when injected into the muscle, when applied to the skin in the short-term, and when inserted into the bladder with a catheter by a physician.

Special Precautions & Warnings:
Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Not enough is known about the use of chondroitin sulfate during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.

Asthma: There is some concern that chondroitin sulfate might make asthma worse. If you have asthma, use chondroitin sulfate cautiously.

Blood clotting disorders: In theory, administering chondroitin sulfate might increase the risk of bleeding in people with blood clotting disorders.

Prostate cancer: Early research suggests that chondroitin might cause the spread or recurrence of prostate cancer. This effect has not been shown with chondroitin sulfate supplements. However, until more is known, do not take chondroitin sulfate if you have prostate cancer or are at high risk for developing it (you have a brother or father with prostate cancer).

INTERACTIONS:
Moderate Interaction Be cautious with this combination
Warfarin (Coumadin) interacts with CHONDROITIN SULFATE
Warfarin (Coumadin) is used to slow blood clotting. There are several reports showing that taking chondroitin with glucosamine increases the effect of warfarin (Coumadin) on blood clotting. This can cause bruising and bleeding that can be serious. Don't take chondroitin if you are taking warfarin (Coumadin).

Re: supplements
I think a few on here know what happened to me last year when I took Glucosamine...I know Kiss does.
Since moving from where I lived about 2 or 3 hours from Vancouver, and their abudance of unbelievable seafood, and into the Interior, I can't get good seafood.
So I no longer have it. I noticed every once in a while I'd get bumps on my neck and swelling around my mouth when I had shrimp a few years back.
I was dianosed with Carpo Tunnel Syndrome in the main tendon that runs my entire left arm. It was from overwork from haying, log building ,chainsawing, chisel work etc...
The Doctor said you should start taking Glucosamine. So being the man that I am..you know a kind of Neandrathal...I thought well if one is good for you...I'll take three.

I honestly thought twenty minutes later that I was having a full blown heart attack....In the middle of my....Episode..I thought what the fuck ? I took those damn pills,...and on the bottle it said "Made from shellfish"
I was relieved that I wasn't going to die...but was pissed that my seafood allergy suspicion was proven right.

Re: supplements
No, I'm not that smart! I am really good at reading then cutting and pasting.lol I have so many family members as well as myself with major and odd medical issues I have become an expert at tracking down information and comparing things. I have on more than one occasion diagnosed my kids before the doctors read the damn paperwork.. I get worried when I see my kids in pain and they let them sit for hours in an emergency room.

This is a true story...My son was having serious chest pains for a couple of days. By the time I found out they had already taken him to the emergency room.(He was legally an adult)His girlfriend called me and told me what was going on. I started researching. I knew we had a history of heart issues but this just didn't seem to be a heart attack. I had an answer in less than 10 minutes. I sent him a text saying this "Have them check you for Costochondritis and Tietze's syndrome" He called me a little while later and told me that when he showed that to the ER doctor he was very surprised. The doctor agreed and said that was exactly what was going on. Although it was hours after he got there. They are very similar one basically has inflammation and will show on blood work and the other does not. They don't know the real cause but find many athletes have it. He was supposed to not lift anything heavy for a while after that. Okay, he owned a bar at the time so that didn't work out well.He had an outdoor bar and every day he had to lug everything out to set up and then in to close up. Including stage equipment. He is better now but always has to be aware that it can come back. That is one of many of these types of things. Some stories funny some scary but I never just take a doctors word either. There is a scary story that goes with why, but I will tell you another time.

Re: supplements
have you tried ointments? personally i have had many injuries to joints and muscles, you know strains, sprains, breaks, contusions, cuts, scraps, hyper extensions, most of the time i used dit da jow mixed with a horse ointment that can be dangerous if contaminated. but the dit da jow works well by it self. check to see what mma fighters are using, you can bet they get a few injures.

If they are anything like the rodeo cowboys I knew then they just use Jack Daniels. As for the dose they just keep drinking until all pain is gone. At least until they wake up the day or so.But by then they figure the pain in their head is worse than anything they were trying to kill to start off.

Cowboy Self Medication is a practical one.
Anything 40 proof or better can be used as an antiseptic to apply to wounds, or abrasions on the skin.
It's then consumed to help dull the pain...We are a group that are strong, in the common sense department.
